** McDreamy update! ** The pup is out of surgery and awake now. Dr. Aiken said things went pretty well. Dream's shunt was huge and easily visible to the team this morning via ultrasound so we didn't have to do the CT scan. (Not sure why it wasn't seen via u/s the first time in San Marcos.) It was also located both outside and inside the liver which complicated things and makes his prognosis more guarded.
Dream's blood pressure was low so his surgical team did not perform the cystotomy nor neuter, and he still has several retained deciduous teeth so we'll have to work on those after he's recovered from his liver procedure. Unfortunately Dream's little body has produced a second bladder stone and multiple kidney stones now so we can't wait too long for his other surgeries.
Of the 3 outcomes we mentioned yesterday, the one we're possibly facing is having to go back in later to finish closing the shunt. Due to size and the complicated location, the band may not close the vessel all the way. We wait for 4-6 weeks to see how he's healing while monitoring closely and maintaining his meds and special diet. The plus about his huge shunt being closed in stages is that it gives his liver a better chance to kick into gear without becoming overloaded. Dream's biggest risk is still portal hypertension.
We'll be paying off this bill for a while and would be super grateful if you'd consider a #taxdeductible #donation to this special puppy. He's been hit with so much in such a short time and no one else went to bat for him. We're doing our best to give him the best. Please share Dream's story with your friends <3
Thank you to everyone who has helped us get this far. We'll keep you updated with news as we et it! Dreamer should be discharged on Saturday if all goes well and he'll be under close surveillance at his awesome foster home particularly over the first week when he's most at risk of seizures.
