January 2, 2019 I started a meditation practice for 20 minutes in the morning. I have missed this twice so far...and for me, a consistent routine in anything, as a freelance creative, is a feat! Meditation has brought me healing, tears, peace, understanding, compassion, and major awareness in several areas...especially with finding my voice, in literal AND metaphorical ways...Am feeling a major shift in my life for the better even though trudging through the rain and mud have been work...I can see there’s sunlight and a bright future ahead...I hope! I’m going to paint you a metaphor here. Let’s say a messenger comes to your house and says there is a wildfire coming your way. You have two options:
Option A: get angry at the messenger and do everything you can to get rid of him. If he is gone, the wildfire does not exist. Once he leaves, another messenger shows up, and another, and another, and another. You can see the fire approaching in the distance. 
Option B: listen to him. Do whatever is necessary to protect yourself and your house from future damage.
Option B is the obvious answer here, yet when it come to our bodies, we have a tendency to choose the former. Every symptom is a signal from the body that there is some sort of imbalance. If you have neck pain and just focus on getting rid of the pain, you are not treating the root of the problem. You are just getting rid of the messenger. This is why in Chinese medicine we do not treat just the neck pain, we treat the whole body. This is holistic medicine; choosing option B and preventing and putting out a fire that might destroy the entire house. Don’t just get rid of the pain or the messenger. It will just go away and another problem/messenger will arise. Love the whole body. Take care of the whole body.

I learned about Red and White Moon Cycles this week. .
Within the past year, I finally ceased any form of hormone manipulation for birth control or fertility treatment and was pleasantly surprised when I started having somewhat regular monthly cycles again. In December, I had an usually longer cycle, but eventually started a new cycle on the night of the full moon that month. I don't believe in coincidence and remember thinking, "Oh, this is why my period was late, so it could start with the full moon." I remember writing a long journal entry about the synergy between a clean slate for creative endeavors and the potential to conceive new ideas being aligned with my own cycle of fertility and actually felt like I'd ventured a little too far in to "woo" territory after I wrote it.

But every month since, the start of my cycle has aligned with the full moon so I finally asked my good friend Google if this was a thing and learned all about Red and White Moon Cycles.

If you're like me and start your cycle with the full moon, this is called a Red Moon Cycle and it means you are currently using your feminine energy to create ideas, projects, and inspiration, rather making babies. Your energy is focused on self-actualization and empowering yourself and others through feminine, intuitive gifts. Historically, those who sync with a Red Moon Cycle were considered the archetypal Wise Woman - healers, witches and enchantresses. The types of woman who were feared.

I was so pleased to learn this was a thing! I started menstruating when I was 13 and I'll be 36 this month. That's over two decades where I had no clue about your cycle being any sort of indicator of any type of alignment, but what if I had? I hope this new shift to acknowledge the importance the feminine becomes a thing we teach to our children, there is power there.

When do you feel most ALIVE?

For me it’s when I’m out in nature with friends

Welp. I got all excited and decided to walk out to the look-out off Blue Ridge Parkway (just a very short walk from my house 😁). You know, white snow covering the rolling hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and all. Would have been a beautiful shot this afternoon. By the time I got there it was super foggy ☹👎 Next time. Got some fun pics and videos along the way though. And caught my neighbors horse running through the snow ❄

Sleep, nutrition, and movement.

Most adults are pretty craptastic at accomplishing these sustainably.

So many enter adulthood at a breakneck pace of ‘do all the things NOW’ and stop practicing the foundation pieces of sustainable health. And then…. They wonder where it all went wrong and why they’re so anxious and depressed.

Yet…. They’re sleeping 4 hours a night.
They’re eating McDonalds, Panera, or Starbucks at every meal.
They never exercise, or if they do, it is inconsistent.

Hmmm. Let’s break this down.

The human body has this cycle called the Circadian Rhythm. If you’ve never heard of it, look it up. When we sleep, the body makes Melatonin. It helps us rest. When we wake, the body makes Cortisol. It’s a stress hormone, and keeps us going through the day… but if we’re not resting enough, cortisol levels wont drop enough, we end up storing too much, and VOILA! Here’s how we make a bunch of stressed out, overweight (because cortisol increases belly fat, ya’ll), neurotic humans.

Americans have become awesomesauce at creating Highly Processed, Hyperpalatable food. McDonald’s, anyone? Panera? Starbucks? It’s made to taste good and be convenient af too. Here’s the problem. This food seriously lacks nutrients we need to be healthy. Take broccoli. Broccoli is high in Vitamins C and K, along with fiber, potassium and folic acid. Folic acid, otherwise known as Folate, has a huuuuge impact on brain cell health and functioning. There’s a reason why pregnant women are told to take prenatal vitamins with extra folic acid….. The moral of the story here, is eating better can heal anxiety and depression, by getting the body and brain the nutrients they need for basic performance.

Exercise has positive impacts on brain function, reduces stress and anxiety, improves sleep, and helps release growth factors, which impact the health of brain cells, repair blood vessels, and grow new brain cells.

So let’s leave it at this.

If you want to be equipped emotionally and physically to handle life’s curveballs, and to just be a better functioning human…

PART 2 Following our latest post, we thought we would share some ideas on ways you can naturally and easily show your gut some extra love 💚 ✔️Eat predominantly plant based. Fill your plate with lot of fruit and vegetables. Especially those glorious leafy greens!
✔️Manage your stress. Next to the food you are consuming, what you are mentally consuming is also an important factor that is often overlooked. Next time you feel overwhelmed or stressed, take the time to activate your parasympathetic nervous system- which is also know as ‘rest and digest’ and feel what a huge difference it makes not only to your gut but to your mental state too. Here are some ideas but find what resonates best with you and go from there: diaphragmatic breathing (deep breaths), meditation, gardening, going for a brisk walk, catching up with a loved one, reading a good book, running a nice bath, enjoying a herbal tea (chamomile is particularly great)
✔️Eat fermented foods like coconut yogurt, kefir, miso, sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha etc
✔️Add a teaspoon of our Ahi Cider tonic to your morning lemon water or enjoy in a small glass of water prior to every meal especially if you are experiencing bloating or indigestion. This will also help to stimulate hydrochloric acid, which supports your body to break down foods so you can absorb the nutrients more effectively.
✔️Mindfulness when eating. Pay attention to how food makes you feel after you have eaten it. Your body is your best messenger so please listen to it! ✔️Chew your food well. This is something we are working on too (no one is perfect!) and extra points if you can do so without any distractions such as the TV, your laptop or mobile phone. ✨
Minimise or remove the below and monitor how your gut, mood and energy levels respond:
❌Processed and  packaged foods
❌Alcohol
❌Processed Sugar
❌Dairy
❌Highly refined grains
❌Preservatives
❌Gluten

but as usual I stumble back on the lines and really feel them come to life again and realise how vastly different all our lives are

some people lean on people
some people lean on places
some people lean on change

and I adore change, I want to see everything evolving all of the time, but I am also really reaching an age maybe where I want to stay in one place... and it’s funny to say that because a year ago I could not keep bloody still for longer than a week

but it’s all okay, maybe I just really needed to realise how much I wanted to stay in the same place

it’s kinda like life is reaffirming my choices and I’m nodding my head like, yes!! I wanna stay now!! haha, hopefully this next move will be my last for a while
