I have been waiting to post this amazing French jug for a while and my visit to Waddesdon Manor last week has inspired me today is the day!
This exceptional miniature jug, made of cast solid silver and then gilded is of the upmost quality and is surprisingly heavy.
Designed in the Rococo revival style and dating to the end of the 19th century it captures the frivolity and movement for which silver is so suited.
The theme of the rocaille is shown by the large oyster shell detail to the body and the conch shell feet that support the jug. The handle is a large c-scroll and the slightly asymmetric shape finishes off the Rococo design.
The gilding is original and has a lovely deep tone with a patina that reflects the light.
The Rococo was a design movement invented in France in the 1730s and comes from the French work rocaille, meaning rocky. It was inspired by nature and had a fun and exuberant manner as opposed to the monumentalise of the baroque that had preceded it. The Rococo was a delicate and intricate movement that influenced design across Europe until around the 1760s but had several revivals in the 19th century.
This jug is FOR SALE, to please DM us for details or check out our website - link in the bio at the top.
