Practicing self care involves nourishing yourself with good food and I love a good bowl of oatmeal, no matter what the weather. Oatmeal does NOT have to be boring! I’ve posted about mental health a few times before, so you may be familiar with my struggle. I lived much of my life dealing w/depression & anxiety. By “dealing with” I really mean suffering through. Because I didn’t deal with it. I thought not talking about it &not getting help meant I was strong. I thought getting help, being open about it, talking about it, meant you were weak. I WAS SO WRONG!
.
I didn’t always deal with depression & anxiety, but I went through some traumatic events during high school and when I was 15 is when it began. Then I went through a bit more in my 20’s and it remained.
.
I can talk about it now because it feels like another life. Although it’s sad to think I suffered in silence for so long, I really am SO grateful that I’m not in that place anymore.
.
It wasn’t really until I was 28 that I changed my life. I got help. I started seeing a therapist. I started @kayla_itsines BBG program, and I slowly began to learn that I wasn’t weak for seeking help, in fact knowing and accepting I needed help-and getting that help-made me STRONG! (& a thanks to 2 of my bff’s who actually encouraged me & supported me more than they probably even know: @eah1106 & @k.h.r._esq - without the 2 of you, I’m not sure I would have had the courage to get help).
.
That’s when my life CHANGED. Starting to interact with a community of women all working towards their health & fitness goals helped me in so many ways. I started to believe I was enough just as I was, and that I could want to change my body while still accepting and loving it as it was. I also found a therapist who at the time helped me realize I wasn’t alone, and that there was nothing wrong with talking to her-and that there was NOTHING WRONG with taking medication to help.

And since then? I’ve never looked back. I still have tough days. Depression and anxiety are things I will have to actively deal with, probably for the rest of my life. But you know what? I learned that I AM NOT ALONE. That is why I’m sharing this, and why I continue to share about mental health. For so long I felt alone. Thinking NOTHING would ever be ok. BUT YOU ARE NOT ALONE. You don’t have to feel that way! I’m here for you💕

365 days clean & sober

The last year was the hardest year of my life. Relapsing after having years without my DOC, losing my family, friends, almost took down my career, i hurt the people i love but most importantly i hurt myself.
.
If you know me, i am very stubborn- i refuse to get knocked down and stay down. When i came back to NA i took my sobriety serious & i took every suggestion people gave me, go to 90 meetings in 90 days, get a sponsor (in my case 3 different sponsors) stay away from men and stick with women who have clean time.
.
I really didnt think i was gonna make it to 30 days let alone one fucking year. 🥳🥳
.
This past week was intense to say the least, reliving my relapse, being heartbroken, realizing how far ive come but also how far i can go.
.
Monday night i got my one year medallion & i want to thank everyone who attended and celebrate me but most importantly the program. It fucking works 🙋🏻‍♀️ i cried, i got roasted, i got tons of love and laughs. I made amazing friendships and people who i can call family, from movie nights with someones family to trampoline parks to going out dancing to driving lessons to having and receiving unconditional love 💕

OWNER MINDSET INSTEAD OF VICTIM (BLAMING) MINDSET ⁣

The victim mentality has always been a pet peeve of mine. I have prided myself on being able to take responsibility for my actions (including my mistakes), how I contribute to conflict, apologize for my errors, and repair when I have done something wrong, hurt someone, or not act as my best self. I am not a fan of sweeping things under the rug (I wasn’t even able to as a child) and prefer to face struggles and conflict head-on — addressing it — and resolving it. ⁣
⁣
When someone blames me for issues in our relationship and refuses to take responsibility for their contribution, it most definitely reduces my respect and trust for them. Especially if it’s a pattern. Relationships are two-way streets and no one is a true victim, but some people do have a victim mindset that can stay with them throughout their life. Be careful with someone who is in this mental space… they have their own unresolved issues, often rooted in childhood, which they have not thoroughly worked through.  They “wipe” and project their problems and emotions onto others. They take the “easy” route in blaming everyone and everything else for the problems in their life. Otherwise, if they started taking ownership, they’d be forced change – and change is painful and scary. What they may not realize is, when they blame, they give away all of their power. They’re saying, “Hey, I have no power here because it’s all your fault… I have no power to change my beliefs, thoughts, emotions, or circumstances. You have all the power.”⁣
⁣
This blaming victim mentality can sadly also be a learned trait that can get passed down between generations. Individuals with victim mentality are often manipulative and draining. Sadly, they are also in a great deal of pain. They subconsciously want others to suffer as much as they internally suffer. (Which is where the saying: “hurt people hurt people” comes from). I’ve been there myself, and it’s not a very attractive or uplifting place to be.

If you follow other HANDS members, you may have heard that tomorrow is Break the Stigma Day. To be honest, I don’t think that it aligns with me, but I still want to participate in the pieces that do fit.

For me, breaking the stigma is something I actively work toward each day—and it’s not just herpes stigma. If we are truly invested in this work, if we REALLY care, we work to dismantle stigma in our lives every single day. Whether that stigma is related to mental health, race, diet culture, sexuality, or other social stigmas, this work is CONSTANT. No matter what the calendar says, it’s not just a day that highlights these stories and voices. It’s a conscious education and unlearning. It’s life.

Despite my work and the work of others in the sexuality field, publicizing an STI diagnosis is something that carries a high level of potential for enacted stigma. I still receive negative messages. I still have family members who “don’t get it.” I still face rejection through this confrontation, and it does create distance between people I’d rather be closer with. It’s something I’ve always faced in my field.

For me, publicizing felt innate due to my intended career path as a sex therapist. I fell into this dark place and somehow arose with a niche and passion. But it’s not always as simple as that.

So I’m going to offer a few alternatives of ways to break HSV stigma each and every day. 1️⃣ Learn. I’m always learning, unlearning, and reframing. 2️⃣ Listen. Be aware of where you hear stigma in your own life. On TV? With friends? Family 3️⃣Confront it. Those small conversations MATTER. It doesn’t have to be through sharing your diagnosis. Drop some knowledge, share a stat, offer a real life scenario. 4️⃣ Own it. Owning it doesn’t always equate to publicizing your diagnosis, or telling everyone in your family. Owning it is, quite simply, your personal declaration to self.

Inching my way back to being this girl again... Ever feel like there’s a piece of you that is still inside of you, but it’s buried so deep that it’s hard to see anymore? That’s the way I feel about the me in this picture. She’s still there. I can feel her. I know she’s dying to get out again. But she also knows that the rest of this crap has to get out of me first, so that she can be unapologetically herself when she comes out to play again. I feel like she’s right there, hovering like the angel tattoo on my arm, but she’s having a beer (or something stronger) and waiting for the right time to surface again. And that’s ok. I am a therapist and I have invalidated people. I never intended to hurt them, but I still did.

I’ve put my foot in my mouth by telling someone they look amazing when they really wanted me to recognize how awful they were feeling.

There are people who seek to hurt, invalidate, criticize, and demean. 
But there are also people who are genuinely trying to help. They’re excited about giving you that new “cure.” They really do think you look great. They want to take away your pain.

I know that might not change how it feels on your end.

I talk a lot about dismissive positivity. But that might look different for all of us. We have the power to educate and teach people what feels dismissive to us, as long as they’re willing to listen.

If anyone says something to you from that dismissive positivity column, I hope you’ll respond when you feel comfortable.

It’s ok to say
“I know you’re trying to help. I feel like you don’t see me when you say that.”

Anxiety and depression go hand in hand. The dynamic duo no one ever invites but seems to be impossible to get rid of. -

Anyone who’s experienced an anxiety disorder or clinical depression can relate to the feeling of melting into the couch when you get home from work. That tightness or heaviness in your chest without reason. Achy, fatigued body and mind that feels like it’s underwater. If your body is in a constant state of anxiety it feels like all you can do is try to keep yourself afloat.

To be honest, I still don’t notice when I’m deteriorating until it gets pretty bad sometimes. I’ve done a lot of introspection work in therapy to identifying my triggers and when symptoms are worsening. But I’m a very outgoing and positive person so from the outside it’s nearly impossible for others to see the extent of my illness. -

I don’t say these things to evoke pity or sympathy but to shed light on mental health. -

No Easter family pic this year so I’m posting a pic of part of my NOLA family #teamNOMC. Plus me at the end of my 2nd @ccc10k!

Saturday was a good day. The weather was perfect. I ran without stopping except for one gulp of water. Our team of 80+ people collectively surpassed a goal of raising $30,000. That’s a lot for healthcare for the creatives of New Orleans.
.
.
At some point during the run, it was no longer about challenging myself to beat the clock. I’m not doing this for some record at age 46. I did it for my mental/physical health & to be part of something bigger than myself. So my goal was to just run non-stop.
.
.
I ran 6 miles for our sweet mama, & in memory of our younger brother JR., for all family members who deal with mental health matters, including myself. It’s orgs like @no_musicians_clinic You Got This! mental health awareness outreach programs that help save lives. They’ve been serving the area for 21 years. If more existed 22 years ago, could he possibly still be here?

But then his story wouldn’t be heard, the awareness not be as important, more lives could be lost in the shadows of darkness. The Dream would’ve never happened.

And I may not have found this team! It’s always a highlight to meet & run with some of these artists (esp @Dj soulsister 💕), to meet new team members, to volunteer, to belong. .
.
Our team of 80+ raised over $31,000 for the NOMAF! So many lives can be helped! Each year I become more inspired & embrace Easter in a new light.
.
.
And after all the celebrating it’s become tradition to visit the place we frequented growing up Easter weekend to visit my brother’s Godfather’s family. I leave any worries on the steps of St. Louis Cathedral & walk towards a path of hope. This past few years’ derailing has steered me towards a greater passion to help others.

My first time to go to a psychiatrist was at the age of 5 and I have been in therapy on and off for my whole life. I was a custom jeweler and was engaged to a beautiful Australian girl. Two weeks before the wedding we found out that she had breast cancer and it had already metastasized tovher lungs. I had anxietynissues but now it started to really affect my ability to function in everyday life. We closed the store for a week every month to go to Houston for Chemotherapy. She died 3 years later, I was 35 years old. I began cutting myself. Now this is not something I had heard about but when I would start have what I know now was a psychotic episode I would cut myself and the mental pain I was having would go away. i NEVER considered myself a perfectionist ☝🏼my room is messy 24/7 & i’m always running late.

but then i googled “signs of a perfectionist”.....and well.... 🥺🤚🏼my name is shelby & i’m officially a recovering perfectionist

can i get a 🤚🏼 if you can relate to any of the following?

1. you think in all-or-nothing terms. something is either right or wrong, good or bad, perfect or a disaster

2. you think & act in extremes. "i had one cookie & screwed up my diet...i might as well eat them all”

3. you can’t trust others to do a task correctly, so you rarely delegate. people see you as a control-freak, but you see your actions as just wanting to get the job done right.

4. you have demanding standards for yourself & others. you believe in always giving your best & expect others to do the same. you are scared to death of looking like a failure.

5. you have trouble completing a project because you think there is always something more you can do to make it better. you obsess about sharing your project with others. you want to make sure your work is the best it can be before revealing it.

6. you use the word “should” a lot. “i should do this" & “they should do that,” may be common phrases, both out loud and inside your head. you have certain “rules” you believe that you & others, should follow. when those rules aren't followed, you aren’t pleased.

7. your self-confidence depends on what you accomplish & how others react to you. you strive for excellence & need validation from others to feel good about your accomplishments.

8. you tend to fixate on something you messed up. you may have done something right, but still focus instead on the one mistake you made.

9. you procrastinate, or avoid situations where you think you might not excel

many people who procrastinate or avoid doing something are actually perfectionists: they're afraid they will fail because if you can’t do it perfectly, why bother at all?

Interview therapists before you start therapy with them! Your relationship with your therapist (and the work you put in) will determine how successful you are in therapy. Not all therapists are meant to be YOUR therapist, just like not every person is meant to be YOUR significant other. And just like with a significant other, therapists aren’t perfect but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have expectations for them. Finding a therapist who (mostly) meets your criteria is essential because  it weeds out therapists who won’t be a good fit for you. Identify YOUR needs and go from there. Here are some examples👇🏻

If you’re LGBTQ, ask if they specialize in working with LGBTQ folks. 🌱

If feminism empowers you, ask if they integrate feminism into their practice. 🌱

As a Personal Lifestylist; I take health and nutrition to a whole new level. .

By incorporating whole body health and wellness, and taking into consideration all aspects of your life; from diet and exercise, to stress, illness, lifestyle habits and family time. Because the reality is; being healthy isn't just about eating right, and getting in some exercise. It's a complete life balance. .

Having said that; I also understand that everyone's lives are different, and some days there just isn't enough time to cram everything in. I'm realistic. I get it, life can be crazy!

So what I do is work with you to determine what changes you want to make; how much time you have to dedicate, and what will actually be practical for your life. Every client gets a personally designed regimen. I help make living healthy as easy as possible; set you up with some tips to keep it simple, and in the end we will have created a plan that works for you!!

Typically my plans are tailored to a two month timeline; after that we assess your goals, progress, etc, and create a new plan to continue your journey. Of course this is all subjective to each client; as everyone is different, and it all depends on what you want to achieve. The reason I do my plans in two month timelines, is because I find this gives clients enough transition time to adjust and work the new lifestyle changes into their routines. I don't like to shock my clients, and want you to be able to slowly make the changes over time; overwhelming yourself with a ton of changes at once can be too much. .

However if you want to jump in the deep end right away, I won't stop you ha ha. Again it's all in what you want to do. I also understand that money can be a factor, so creating a plan that you can follow long term is always an option too.

Consultations are always FREE, and I only take on clients if I feel I can really help you make the changes you want to make.
