DIALECTICS⚡️Dialectics represent the art of balancing. A synthesis of opposites. It is a moving away from dichotomous, extreme, and polarized thinking, behaviours, and emotions.

Dialectics mean that two seemingly opposing facts can both be true. I can be a good person, and do some not good things. I can be generous and selfish. I can be right and wrong.
.
The main dialectic of Dialectical Behavioural therapy is that of Acceptance AND Change. This can throw us for a loop - if we are trying to change something, doesn’t that mean we are not accepting? Step out of this “either/or” mentality and create space for a “both/and” perspective.  For example, instead of thinking “I’m either on track or I am not”, make room for “I am BOTH on track AND not”. Reality is usually best captured from a dialectical stance. When we consider opposing points, we can then merge both perspectives. This is how we get unstuck and where change occurs.

This concept can be challenging to grasp, I know. Here are some other examples, in which we often think it’s one or the other. Notice how tension and conflict are reduced when making room for both opposing statements to be true. THIS IS INCREDIBLY VALIDATING.

💭 I BOTH want to succeed AND tend to sabotage my efforts
💭 I BOTH know my partner loves me AND I feel like they don’t care
💭 I am BOTH independent AND also want help
💭 I am BOTH doing the best I can AND can do better

YOUR TASK. Pay attention to your thinking and reasoning - is it framed in an either/or context? What would it look like, if you were to shift to a both/and perspective? Does this activity make you uncomfortable? If so, ask yourself why? What do you have to let go, to move to a dialectical way of perceiving yourself, others, and the world? Why is letting that go scary?

The ultimate goal is to balance the opposites in your life. To validate yourself, as well as others. To accept reality, but also work to change it. Dialectical thinking means becoming comfortable with paradox and confusion.It is stepping away from the constant need for rationality, “facts” and rigidity. It is embracing the middle path.

I keep trying to remind myself the uncontrollable cannot be controlled or even slightly manipulated. There is color in the grays of life but it does not appear until you make an effort to search for it.

When I first met my OH he got me this lil gem because he thought I was one of the strongest people he'd met. I'd never thought about that before, I was just being me. .

I do now consider myself a strong person but I am strong and open, if there is a day where I'm not feeling "fierce" I own it. I guess there is a strength in that too. Strength in being honest with yourself. .

I wear it on those days where I'm not really feeling it, just as a wee reminder ✨

Personal development has been a HUGE part of my growth within my business, school, and my health. The only reason I even know what personal development is, is because of coaching. It is my JOB to take time everyday to do some sort of PD activity and focus on my own personal growth - I think that’s pretty cool 🥰 But to be honest, I haven’t been doing my job this week because my reading was non-existent. I’ve been quiet today. It’s been a long, unexpectedly tiring Friday 😴
.
But...on very little sleep, I still did my workout- and then had the energy to deep clean our bedrooms & do some laundry...I was determined to be productive today!
.
One thing I’ve learned over the years is: exercise when you’re having a good day, and exercise even HARDER when you’re having a BAD day.. that mental fortitude of doing things you don’t feel like doing will take you far in life 🧘🏻‍♀️
.
And.....stay grateful...ESPECIALLY on the days that challenge you.
.
So today- I’m thankful for fuzzy socks with the sticky bottoms..after a long shower they made my feet happy 🤗

Since high school, I’ve been told I “do the most” Guilty 🙋🏾‍♀️. I do. People would always ask me how do I find the time, when do I sleep, and how does everything get done. 
It wasn’t until the last few years that I had a real answer to give. I’m FOCUSED. I am still working on being focused on my daily tasks, through meditation and discipline, and it’s a long process. But one thing I can say is that when I want something, I have laser focus on it. 
Sometimes it just takes a little mental flexibility 😉🙏🏾

I struggle with anxiety and (sometimes) mild depression. I always have. I'm very type A and that feeds into anxiety heavily. Here are the things people suggested I try to alleviate it:
.
1. Pray

2. Smile

3. Be grateful/thankful

4. Pray some more

5. AVOID therapy/meds

Let me explain something. I know people meant well. They did. But the only thing that helped was getting into a regular exercise routine, eating better and seeing a psychiatrist AND a counselor. Period.

I'm sharing this because someone right now is scared to make that appointment, take that class or change their diet, but they are struggling with how they are living day to day. It's not an easy change, it does not happen overnight, but it's worth it. Start with ONE thing. I don't care if that's replacing one soda a day with a bottle of water, prepping one healthy meal a week, doing one pushup a day or scheduling one consult with a counselor next month. Just start with ONE thing and stick with it.

And don't be afraid to ask for help. And, most importantly, understand that not everyone has the capacity or emotional intelligence to help you. They may want to but they just can't. (Part 2/2): “I did three combat deployments in total, one in Iraq and two in Afghanistan. My first deployment was about 10 months and then my last two were four months each. The final two took place while I was enrolled in college and playing football for Texas. I was in the 19th Special Forces group with the Texas National Guard and they would attach me to teams during the summer. I would take my finals early and then deploy for four months before coming back to school and playing football. A lot of us saw things that impacted us and we experienced difficult stuff so I understand veterans coming back and dealing with PTSD or trauma. I know a lot of guys struggled getting out because they no longer had that same camaraderie or team environment. I was fortunate to have the football team because that’s what really helped me avoid some of those struggles. I completely transitioned out of the service in February 2015, right before I got picked up by the Seattle Seahawks. When football came to an end, I found myself in an all too familiar position of wanting to continue my service. I would never compare combat to playing a game on the field, but the transition is very similar. It’s a loss of the team and the uniform you identify with. We started @mergingvetsandplayers (MVP) with the idea of bringing us all back together and putting us back on a team. There’s a support system in place and people to lean on. We’re not therapists and we don’t claim to have the answers, but at the same time, we have a shared experience. My first deployment was about 10 months and then my last two were four months each. The final two took place while I was enrolled in college and playing football for Texas. I was in the 19th Special Forces group with the Texas National Guard and they would attach me to teams during the summer. I would take my finals early and then deploy for four months before coming back to school and playing football. A lot of us saw things that impacted us and we experienced difficult stuff so I understand veterans coming back and dealing with PTSD or trauma. I know a lot of guys struggled getting out because they no longer had that same camaraderie or team environment. I was fortunate to have the football team because that’s what really helped me avoid some of those struggles. I completely transitioned out of the service in February 2015, right before I got picked up by the Seattle Seahawks. When football came to an end, I found myself in an all too familiar position of wanting to continue my service. I would never compare combat to playing a game on the field, but the transition is very similar. It’s a loss of the team and the uniform you identify with. We started @mergingvetsandplayers (MVP) with the idea of bringing us all back together and putting us back on a team. There’s a support system in place and people to lean on. We’re not therapists and we don’t claim to have the answers, but at the same time, we have a shared experience. Happy Friday everyone! Hope today is going well and I hope you made yesterday a great day too!

Now as for today’s post, I know it’s a bit out of the ordinary because it’s not a flexing photo 🤷🏽‍♂️ BUT I assure you it has everything to do with health and fitness. - 
Let’s clarify something first. What do I mean by fitness? Fitness, to me, is training yourself to be competent and capable of getting things done and being able to handle yourself. The dictionary’s second definition of fitness is: “the quality of being suitable to fulfill a particular role or task.” - 
So there you have it. Fitness is able being competent. And there is so much more to life than being just physically fit. We, as humans, have this phenomenal organ (the brain) that is capable of so much potential. It’s part of why the human species rules the planet 🙂. Point being that we need to treat our brains with care and much like our bodies, the brain needs to grow and get stronger. BRAIN GAINZ! So here at work, I’m exercising my brain daily. I’m learning new things and thinking in new ways. Much like lifting. You lift heavier weights and switch up the routines. Once you’ve accomplished one goal, you move onto the next. - 
Another key fact is that, just like when you work out your body, when you work out your brain, you feel better. You’ll feel a sense of pride and confidence. You know something knew! You reached a new goal! You made gainz! And when you achieve these feeling of success, like finishing a workout, you feel Great! Now for the best part of all this... - 
Imagine how powerful and good you can feel if you merge these two aspects of fitness together... think for a second. The amount of pride you feel when you see growth in the gym plus the pride of growing at work or in a personal hobby and mix that with good eating. Well guess what you just did. You achieved a huge victory and you just grew that much more as an individual. You just unveiled that more potential and proved you can achieve greatness. - 
Do this over and over and you achieve the compound effect where your small success start turning into huge victories and you are back in control! #fitnessmindset #openyourworld

This momentum will naturally fuel your drive and inspire you to take more action towards what you're working for. In turn creating more momentum. But you have to take that first step, then the next. Through the process we've discussed you would have connected to your deepest desires and developed strength, focus and a no excuses attitude. It is a reminder that we need to be able to categorise and prioritise the problems that we face in our lives. Important activities are often the ones that are going to get us to our goals, whereas urgent ones require immediate attention and usually have to do with achieving someone else's goals.⁣

You can make a strong argument that consistently accomplishing tasks which are important, but not urgent, is the one ability that separates top performers from everyone else.⁣

Fitting, bc some days that’s exactly how it feels. Days are still too short and cold. You’re tired and just feel “off.” Some days you can feel the complete opposite of strong. I know it’s true for me •

Then, I remember. Spring will come. Summer too. Just hold onnnnn. Put your head down. Focus only on today. Focus only on the moment if ya need to. Breathe.

It wasn’t pride that made me feel like mental health and therapy was for the weak-minded. No, that would have been a far less complicated answer. The reason that I carried myself with such disdain for seeking help was that I needed it so desperately. But in a “boys don’t cry” / “if you don’t stop crying I’ll hit you harder” kind of society I was destined to avoid the very thing that could have helped me because I didn’t want to be a pussy.

For the majority of my adult life, the notion of dealing with problems felt fraudulent to me. I was fine, or at least I had convinced myself that I was. I was the house is on fire, but at least it is raining kind of fine. Once I understood this, I had to eradicate over two decades worth of brainwashing and abuse to even begin to open up, but I knew the only way I was going to take control of my life was through therapy. My only wish is that it didn’t take a full collapse to see that was what I needed.

Fast forward 5 years later and my definition of fine is the house is on fire and it’s raining but I’m outside while the firefighters work to put it out. I no longer hide under the blankets while the walls burn in the hopes that I’ll survive the night. That is what therapy has given me. I think that everyone should see a therapist if for no other reason to erase the bullshit that is feed into our minds as children that problems just magically go away if you avoid them and especially to get rid of that bit that boys don’t cry. Boys do cry and so do men. I was watching this Adidas commercial and totally cried my face off. I didn’t beat myself up about it either, another lesson gifted to me through seeing a therapist.

I don’t think therapy is about solving a problem and honestly, sometimes it has left me with more questions than solutions. What I believe is that by sitting in some chair across from a person that can help me understand myself in the world a little bit better than before our hour started has immense value. There is no price I wouldn’t pay to love myself a little bit more.

As a man, I give all men permission to go to therapy. It doesn’t make you weak and if anyone around you tells you otherwise well… fuck em.
