As it is #worldmenopaueseday18 I have been reflecting on how things have changed over this last year. This video was from exactly 1 year ago. What has changed in the world of #menopause? Some days I think lots other days, not so much. We still have a long way to go. Personally I have conquered a lot of  demons relating to menopause and hope I am honest with you on here and  on my blogs.  I started  Meno and Me to help other women, we have a closed Facebook group Meno and Me ageless goddesses also just in case you did not know. I receive  private messages daily thanking me for my advice; it is a pleasure. I have uploaded my latest blog - please see the link above👆👆👆👆 thank you for following, reading my blogs and commenting and interacting as my mission is to build a community of women who feel supported, helped and also inject some humour into this sometimes rather challenging part of our lives -  it is just an extension of what I have been doing for over 20 years. What to eat to beat the belly fat and how to minimise those #menopause symptoms? I changed my diet massively at the beginning of my menopause and doing so it really helped my symptoms, I also lost weight too which was a bonus! I now can be more relaxed with my eating, but I do notice if I do not eat well my energy is zapped, my concentration suffers and I just feel rubbish. It  really is sensible to stick to a healthy eating routine to keep your heart and bones healthy as well as keeping those symptoms at bay. Press ups at your desk or on the kitchen table. Keep your body straight and pull in your tummy lower your chest towards the table, rpt 12 times if you can then do the door stretch. Not only will it help tone your arms but help prevent #osteoporosis in the wrists. The wrists, hips and spine are the major sites. We are at higher risk of osteoporosis during #menopause because of the decrease in #oestrogen.⠀

Rolling and stretching is a really important part of my exercise routine.  Some days I just dedicate to mobility, rolling and stretching as #painfuljoints during #menopause can be a real problem, certainly for me because of all of my injuries as well as a decrease of oestrogen.  I am lucky enough to be on  #hrt however I still need to look after my body. When I am in the gym I usually just leave people alone, but this lady who must have been in her 60's was doing something really wrong that could have caused an injury so I had to say something, 1 hour later we parted ways! It is great to talk, which seems unheard of these days especially in the gym, where people are locked into their music or even on their phones when working out! My sister went to a spin class the other day and there way a girl constantly on the phone during the class! How is that going to help her #mentalhealth ?!⠀

Mobility is a must during #menopause the synovial fluid and collagen in our joints decrease because of age and hormonal depletion. Motion really is lotion during menopause and #ageing it is a good idea to do some gentle movements throughout the day to mobilise your joints, this I have to do every morning otherwise I am in lots of pain and can hardly move first thing! Hold the stretch for as long as you can the more you do this the better you will feel, you can even do this on the sofa whilst watching TV! Try it meno’s ler me know how you get on.#motionislotion⠀

#menopause can suck. There is no 2 ways about it, I have control of mine, however I still have down days. Those of you who saw my live feed on Wednesday on mental health awareness day listened to me talk about how I have suffered with anxiety, depression and the struggle's I have had. I now identify the triggers and try not to let myself get pulled down. The thing that you MUST do, along with exercise of course, is to do something to make you smile. I went to see this last week, it was AMAZING!! It made me smile lots! The seats can be expensive but top tip - go to the small booth by Leicester square station just before the show and ask for returns or cheap seats, you can usually get them for half price.  #42ndstreet @42ndstreetldn #mentalhealthawarenessweek⠀

Count each breath 10 times with your eyes closed and go back to 1, if you go to a higher number do not stress just go back to one when you do. #meditation #breathing⠀

As it is #mentalhealthawareness week I would like to send out a virtual hug to all of those women out there who are suffering because of #menopause symptoms. It is not fun. I know from experience, I am upbeat on here because it is my job to make you smile and to feel good😜😜, I have been doing it for years the old-fashioned way, so this is just an extension of what I do in “real” life.  Throughout my life I have suffered with rather a lot of rubbish and my mental health has suffered; anxiety and depression are not new to me but I try and no longer let it take control I really do try to look at the positives and be thankful , I have been on anti-depressants and have had more therapy that you can shake a stick at. So, today I would like to send tribute to those who either just make me smile for their silliness, just being kind and fabulous, friends, other grammers with gorgeous content or those who inspire me for what they achieved for one reason or another you know who you are. 💋💋 ⠀

What has this photo have to do with #menopause ? for years due to my symptoms of anxiety, panic attacks and generally feeling horrible☠☠ with no energy I would turn down lots of social engagements. This week I have managed to try out 2 new exercise 🤸‍♀🤸‍♀🤸‍♀🤸‍♀🤸‍♀classes; spin and Barrecore and trained in the studio myself, I have also taken on 2 new Skype menopause clients and 1 new client at my studio for general fitness. Friday night I went for curry and yesterday I managed to drag myself up to the West End to see @42ndstreetldn in the rain 🌧☔☔⛱, wow what a show!! I am being very thankful and grateful that I can do these things again 5 years ago all I wanted to do was curl up in a ball and cried rather a lot. My blog is still up – link above – I have gone back to the beginning and am sharing my journey, I am working on the 2nd phase of the blog this week. I hope it helps other Meno’s and gives hope that there is life after menopause! Yep the video has no sound.. This is a silly game... Try and name that tune!? Do you remember that programme!? I had a menopause madness moment,  as I had lots of work to do but couldn't face it, so decided to do something to make me feel better, so I did 3 of my  favourite things, exercise to music, on my Power Plate and singing. Can you name that tune? Its one of  my favourites on my workout playlist. Recent research shows that if we sing  feel good endorphins are released so if you exercise and sing as well then you have a double whammy of those endorphins. Do it ,do i,t do it! I don't expect you to post on the grid but just message me on here to say that you did and how great it made you feel! Let me know your song and see if you can guess mine!!😘😘⠀

Yep I am showing off! But I do not care as I am feeling very blessed that I was able to do this during a great weekend meeting some amazing new friends, I am in the pink bikini and next to me are two Claire’s, one is over 10 years younger than me and one is over 10 years older, the lady on the right in the photo is the older one, both Claires look amazing but what I hope is that I can still be doing this in my 60’s.  Yes, I still suffer with my injuries and have pain daily, but compared to where I was 5 years ago I am very pleased to be where I am now as when I entered menopause I really would not have thought I would be doing yoga on a paddle board in Ibiza with some great new friends at 51. Thank you @ericapew  Some of you have been sending me private messages asking me how I beat my menopause, so I have decided to go back to the beginning and writing a series of blogs on my journey, my blog is now on the site and you can click on the link above 👆👆for the first instalment.⠀

What is funny about this little video is, I asked the instructor at the end of the class if I could get him on video as I talk about #50plusfitness and I am trying out new classes “Sure” he said but when I mentioned then M word #menopause he nearly collapsed with embarrassment😱😱😂, (which is what I am laughing about) but  he styled it out really well  bless him! As it is #MenopauseAwarenessMonth I am stepping outside of my comfort zone;  training at my usual gym and own studio @bermondseypt and trying out different classes and sharing my experiences with you. I am active on my stories (above). I really enjoyed the @barr_core class and thought I had come out ok, but today OMG I am feeling it in my bum, tum and legs! However this is a good, positive pain as I know my muscles are recovering which means they will only become stronger and leaner, where as 5 years ago my body was aching for a different reason. Hello Meno’s! As its now October and it is #menopause awareness month I was wondering what I can do differently. I have asked some other Meno’s to contribute a blog. If you would like to contribute a blog or story about menopause, good or bad so other Meno’s do not feel isolated 😭please DM me or email me on hello@menoandme.com  I have also decided to try different exercise classes, 👯‍♂💃🏻o last night I dragged myself to a new #spinclass at 7pm @spinworkscs 45minutes of sweating and if you have read my stories then you will know that my anxiety of being too old or invisible were not met! The instructor was great and made a point of saying hi and asked if I had been before, I shall be back! However my worries would not have put me off going. What exercise are you going to do today Meno’s? Do you feel anxious about going to a gym or class? Does this stop you doing exercise? I think I worry more about my ability than anything else, I don't take it for granted that I am comfortable in fitness classes or gyms because I have spent the las 25 years in them. I feel that my physical ability might hold me  back, my neck and shoulders were killing me and I did wonder about going as holding onto the handle bars can make the pain worse, but afterwards because of the endorphins that were released during the class I had a good stretch and roll and actually feel better.  Let me know what stops you exercising. 👟👟 I really would love to hear from you.⠀

What is your incentive to exercise during #menopause? Mine is health then weight is secondary,  however I jumped on the scales today and have managed to lose the summer 4 pounds! I really strive to be mobile and pain free but it's great when ones jeans feel less tight!! 🤪🤪🍾💋💋⠀

Apologies for my appearance, roots need doing and I am not generally looking my #menopause best! 😁 However now that summer is over, and I am over this bug I am happy to be getting back to some type of routine, the summer has been great but has taken its toll on my weight and appearance, however I am happy to be feeling good again! When we are younger I think we spend a lot of time thinking and worrying about our appearance – these days I am happy to be pain free and feeling good!  For me, now,  exercising is more about feeling good and maintenance, if I can maintain being in “good physical” shape; that includes keeping my bones and heart healthy through specific exercise but also simple stretching and mobility to keep me pain free, mobile and sane! Exercise not only helps my body but my mind, defiantly the decrease in oestrogen has affected my mood 😜😜 and have more “thinking/worrying” moments 😟😟 if I don’t exercise. You don’t have to go to a gym but just getting out for a brisk walk will help; So off you go Meno’s #anxiety #mentalhealth #exerciseformentalhealth⠀

Firstly, thank you to @womeninsport_uk for the information for this slide that I used in a recent presentation on how exercise during #menopause can help with symptoms. In my recent blog I mentioned how important to me feeling good over looking good is. I would have never have posted a photo of myself in a bikini on open social media 20 years ago (see previous posts) which is mad because I looked great and had a much better body astatically then– however being destroyed by life and menopause and coming out the other side,  I now feel as if I am more in control and happy again.  However, when I feel good it usually shows on the outside! This is true for many women. In a survey undertaken by Women In Sport that looked at what is important to women in modern day Britain these 6 core values change over time, when we reach menopause you can see what is at number one. If you have been destroyed by menopause you know that you would do anything to be able to feel good again. Firstly, thank you to @womeninsport_uk for the information for this slide that I used in a recent presentation on how exercise during #menopause can help with symptoms. In my recent blog I mentioned how important to me feeling good over looking good is. I would have never have posted a photo of myself in a bikini on open social media 20 years ago (see previous posts) which is mad because I looked great and had a much better body astatically then– however being destroyed by life and menopause and coming out the other side, I now feel as if I am more in control and happy again. However, when I feel good it usually shows on the outside! This is true for many women. In a survey undertaken by Women In Sport that looked at what is important to women in modern day Britain these 6 core values change over time, when we reach menopause you can see what is at number one. If you have been destroyed by menopause you know that you would do anything to be able to feel good again. !Newsflash! #menopause women whopping it up in Ibiza! My new blog post up now! See the link in my Bio.👆👆👆 I meet this amazing young lady @ericapew a few years ago at a “wrap party” after an event that Greg had been involved in. We clicked straight away, a few years later there I am with 25 of her friends, whom I had never meet having what was described as more like the “hangover 3!” than a 40th Birthday celebration, it was AMAZING! When I came home I got the most horrible bug and 🤒 whilst lying in my pit feeling very sorry for myself I was reflecting on the last few years. If someone had said to me, a broken peri-menopausal woman that I would be paddle boarding and generally whopping up with some new fabulous friends a few years down the line in Ibiza I would not have believed them. Wow, have far have I come. I realise that I have a lot of new followers on here and my blog, so I am going to go back the beginning as looking at this photo you probably wouldn’t believe how broken I was. Would I have posted a photo of myself in a bikini even 10 years ago when my body was a lot fitter? NO WAY!! But I have accepted I am 51 and I am happy that I can paddleboard, walk, have fun, meet new friends and look forward to the future, I could get my “old” body back if I really put my mind to it, but I do not want to inflict anymore pain on my body as I would have to train "hard" I am happy to be healthy. So, Meno’s if you are feeling as if your life is over and that you will never feel like your old self again, I am proof that it can be done. Have a read of my blog, I hope it helps you. Another easy stretch that you can do at home or at work, like the door stretch I showed you a couple of weeks ago.  To open the chest, which will help with posture but hopefully those painful shoulders one gets during menopause and just through everyday life. 💖 Make sure you are warm first so do some shoulder rolls and arm circles – which will also help your painful joints – remember what I said before? Motion is lotion and those joints need lubricating. O did I also mention that strengthening will help with those painful joints…which will also help with your bones, which will also help with your mental health. Strong body strong mind 💪💪 is so true. No Meno's I am not trying to do a pedicure I am stretching my hips.. Do both sides obviously,  I do more in my left side where I was hit by a car.  Since posting these simple home stretches I have had lots of messages saying how they have been helping you other Meno's ease pain.  Great!! Yep it is as painful as it looks! 😱  I won’t lie to you rolling can be painful, when you start and if you do a lot become less painful, I should do this one more, as you can tell! I also call this the “poor mans massage” I use this a lot for my injuries and joints, there are so many different ones you can do, but I get a lot of messages from women asking me about painful knees. Sometimes simple stretching and rolling can help. This one is like having a massage on your thighs, I am using one of the tougher rollers, if you have never used one before then you can start off with a foam roller which is less hard. This is  a Trigger Point therapy roller and I use it all over my body. When I am back from holiday I will be posting some videos of how these little suckers can help with your menopausal pain. I have realised that I have not mentioned food and how it can affect menopause symptoms for a while. For 2 years before going on HRT I managed 80% of my symptoms holistically. Some nutritionists will argue that there is no correlation that foods can affect menopause symptoms as there are no “specific” lab studies done, just some generalised trials. I have been in the fitness industry for nearly 25 years and have been on this earth for 51. I really do believe that food as a massive impact on how it can affect the body from inside out  from both personal and professional experience working with many populations. When I hit menopause my anxiety, sleeplessness and hot flushes were just horrible but did manage to improve them with being very vigilant with what I put in my body. I cut down and some weeks completely cut out caffeine, sugar, alcohol and all non “clean” food. Any rubbish basically – I lost a heap of weight and managed my symptoms.  I love to feel good and hate it when I feel sluggish, tired and irritable, when I do it is usually when I have not become breathless, stretched, had time out and not ate as much good stuff as I should. I do not advocate a totally full juice diet but every so often do have a juice to make sure I push as much goodness into my diet as much as possible when I need that extra boost.  I always add some type of protein powder with mine such as pea protein, chi seeds, Maca Powder and some Flax seeds. I mix up what I put in it, my advice is to try and experiment as everyone has different tasts.

This is a good follow up stretch from my last video I posted.  Lower back, hip and knee pain can sometime be alleviated by simple stretches. This may also help with sciatic pain.  This is great to stretch out your hamstring which is the muscles that runs at the back of your leg from just below the knee to above the hip – therefore crossing 2 joints, so stretching this muscle may help knee and hips pain.  I suffer dreadfully with painful muscles and joints due to menopause, ageing, injuries and over use as I have been in the fitness industry for 25 years and was a gymnast, some days I am pain free but I know if I miss a few days without stretching then I am hobbling around for about an hour in the mornings like my old dad when he was 80! Remember -  make sure your muscles are warm before stretching please Meno’s! If you cannot hold onto your leg hold onto your trousers and if you do not have a band like in the photo use a towel, but remember to keep the knee straight even if your foot is further away from your face than mine do not worry! You can become more flexible, just be patient and if you do every day it will only improve and you will feel so much better! I promise.

Right who needs a gym to work out?! Nobody!! A sofa and some pyjamas will do it. This will help with toning the muscles around the hip, simple leg raises, easy. Pull in your tummy so its tight and keep your hips still. Point the toe towards the floor and lead with your heel lift and lower your leg around 15/12 times, do the other side and if you can do this 3 times each side then that will help load your hip bones, which will help with osteoporosis, which, as you know we are at higher risk of during menopause because of the decrease in oestrogen. This will also tone your bottom and outer hip and if you really engage your core will help with your tummy muscles and lower back. If you have a soft sofa, it will probably be best doing this on the floor if you cannot engage your core really tight as you want to keep the lower spine and hips as straight and still as possible.

Another stretch for those painful hips before getting out of bed. Do some leg circles first to mobilise those hips and to warm up those muscles. If you find, like me, that you cannot lift the other foot off the bed – do not worry! It will come, so even if you put one foot on your opposite bent leg and you can feel a stretch in your glute, hip, lower back and even in the inside thigh then all good! So, apart from stretching, mobility and strengthening, sometimes after a long day or when you wake up in a funk and don’t want to move what you  need is something else to help. My “go to” as well as the above are soaking in a magnesium bath, with either a book or the tablet watching Netflix (obviously on the shelve – not in the bath!) I really like to switch off mentally, it is like a “download” for my brain.  Magnesium is mother natures “calming” mineral for the body and mind, it is great to take internally but having magnesium baths really helps me when I have had a busy day in the studio and no amount of stretching will let me “switch off” my muscles. Our brains and nervous system affect how our muscles relax so if both are still wound up then our muscles cannot relax. Magnesium baths are great – plus it gives you a little bit of time to yourself, lock the door and do not feel guilty! #magnesium #magnesiumbaths

While I am sunny myself in fabulous #Ibiza ☀⛱😎 I am going to be kind to you and show you some simple #movements that you can do in the comfort of your own home that I have banked for you while I am on holiday!⛱ I am active on stories, but I am not taking my laptop away so here you go. This is an easy one to do at home. This will not only tone and help defy gravity by lifting the bum and toning the back of the legs and tummy but will help with your bone density in your hips and lower spine, these sites along with upper spine and wrists are high risk sites of risk of osteoporosis so we need to strengthen them, Top tips;⠀
1.	Keep the #knees together – do not lift the leg up that I am showing you in the video⠀
2.	 Pull in your #tummy tight. ⠀
3.	If you do slide back even on carpet come wiggle forward every so often⠀
4.	It’s a tough one – try and do 12, if you can do 2 lots then brilliant – the optimum to help the bones is 3 sets of 12/15⠀
5.	So, do this one then some press ups and rotate 12/15 x 3 times around – if you can only manage a few, its ok, build up over time, but still try and do more than 1 set⠀
6.	Make sure you stretch the glutes and back afterwards – look at my seated stretches down the grid a couple of weeks ago with me on a chair in jean and white T-shirt. 💘😍💋⠀

No, I am not showing off, ok yes, I am – just a little and it’s a bit ironic 🤔 as menopause is a battle and here I am with battle ropes. Anyway, my point is, it is going to be ok, when I hit menopause it was such a hard time. I was recovering from my first shoulder surgery and from a car accident and my dad had passed away,  so I was not as active as I had liked – basically I was the most sedentary I have ever been in my life! I was a gymnast 🤸‍♀🤸‍♀when I was young and then taught aerobics, step, body pump – you name it I taught it! So, when menopause hit me light a freight train it floored me. But I knew if I could take small steps and make positive changes I could tame this horrible beast they call menopause!  This time last year I had my 2nd shoulder surgery, not as major as my first which resulted in frozen shoulder but was pretty horrid, so this is a little reminder for me and a celebration as there is no way I could have used these battle ropes. But slowly I have rehabbed my shoulder and nearly back to my old self, I have accepted that I won’t be as I was before accident, surgeries and menopause but I strive to be the very best of me I can. I am off on holiday and then have a mental time in the studio when I get back so I will be very active on my stories (circles above 👆👆👆👆 ) because it is so easy to upload without having to photo shop my web address with pink frame - so have “banked” some stuff that will be here on the grid but will not be posting every day, as usual. Simple movements during #menopause will help with your painful joints and muscles, also doing little and often. Those of you who are hearing impaired:  I am saying that do all of this for longer and highlighting the benefits of moving the joints and stretching the muscles as if I do no move and stretch I am in pain. 😟😟 Motion is lotion Meno’s! We have stuff in our joints that is like thick glue but if we move it becomes like runny honey! At the end when I stretch I am saying how good it feels and that it is REALLY important to move as much as you can during menopause – this can be performed seated or standing and you can hold onto the back of your chair and take a deep breath which will help you feel energised. Hold the stretches for at least 15 seconds. Happy moving Meno’s! 💋💋😍⠀

If you have been following me on Insta stories you will know that I have had full weekend of get togethers, which includes wine and lots of calories! I have had fun and not over done it, but I am very aware that alcohol is a depressant and can trigger anxiety. Since being menopausal I really need to keep this in check. Yesterday I had a day off and enjoyed being lazy, but I did manage to go for a walk, but today I am staringt the day with my 10 minutes of meditation. Keepings thing balanced during menopause is so important and mental health can be compromised, so make sure Meno’s that you keep on top of things, becoming breathless, will look after your mental health and heart and meditation will look after you nervous system, adrenal glands and your mind.  Just taking 10 minutes out of your day will make a massive difference to your overall mental health.  What I do is set a timer on my phone for 10 minutes, breath in and out calmly until I do 101 then I go back to 1, if my mind wanders or I go over 10 and find I am at 30, I don’t stress! This standing on one leg will help strengthen the lower back, hips and leg, if you move your body, so keeping a straight line and try and touch the floor it will help with strengthening your deeper core muscles too. Do around 12 on each leg, don't worry if you lose balance, its all part of it! Good luck!

Happy Monday Meno's! How to combat those menopausal achy muscles and joints in bed!? Who needs to go to the gym to exercise!?🤸‍♀🤸‍♀ Nobody! If I do not do my mobility and stretches before getting out of bed, then I am hobbling around and feel a lot older than I am! 😟 So, I do my mobility in bed, brining my knees to my chest and circling my legs and hips, so I get the fluid moving in my joints; my hips, lower back and knees, to lubricate them so they feel loser when I get out of bed.  I then do this easy twist stretch, which is great for my lower back, hips and also for my shoulder. It feels lovely to stretch the hips, lower back and upper body, do both sides and hold for as long as you can – 15 seconds minimum.  Then later in the day I am ready to undertake some more intense exercise if I want as I don’t feel as stiff.🤸‍♀🤸‍♀🤸‍♀💪 Motion is lotion ladies, as when we age the fluid in our joints becomes stickier – however if we move more it helps the fluid become less sticky – if you do not move then it stays sticky and you will feel stiff. Also because of the decrease in oestrogen we have less collagen in our joints, so it makes sense to move more! Happy Sunday Meno’s! It feels great to be mobile and pain free.😇 tomorrow I am. Posting another bed exercise so keep tuned!  I have had my fair share of injury and pain, how I keep pain under control is to move more! Doing simple things in the morning not only sets me up physically but mentally for the rest of the day. Being menopausal we must tick so many boxes to feel great, little things can make a big difference to how we feel. 🙏🙏If you feel that if you are in control of your pain and menopause through movement it will help with your mental health. How do I know? Well I have been teaching exercise for nearly 25 years, had multiply injuries and my menopause sucks sometimes, but moving helps, I suffered with anxiety and depression 🧠🧠😵when I entered menopause because I was recovering from shoulder surgery and a car accident, it was the most sedentary I had been in years. But I knew if I took small steps to become more active I would feel in control again and I do! If you follow me on my Insta Stories (circles above👆👆👆👆👆) you know that if I don’t move I feel bonkers! Don’t believe me?  Recently Women In Sport @womeninsport_uk released a study that shows that women feel empowered and in control of their menopause symptoms if they take part in physical activity. The Times @thetimes reported last week that Leicester University have introduced a new menopause policy! @uniofleicester “A university has told its academics to say the word menopause three times a day in an attempt to cause a “dramatic culture change” among its staff. The University of Leicester released a statement entitled “Let’s say ‘menopause’ three times a day” as it announced that it was “the UK’s first university to have a menopause policy”.Andrea Davies, of the university’s school of business, is leading a research team to drive changes in attitude towards the menopause that includes the creation of a permanent “menopause café” in the staff dining area.  I love this, I say it lots – as you know, but I have been working on this project for over 2 years now, however I still come up against brick walls when trying to talk about it to people and I remember that it still is a stigma in society – as is ageing – why? It is a natural process that we go through, it affects all of us at some point. Men as well, so why or why are we living in 2018 and we are just starting to fight against the stigma of ageing and menopause? Happy Friday! Competition time!
Pelvic floor function is compromised during menopause because of the decrease in oestrogen, so we need to work these important muscles more than ever before.
When I teach pelvic floor exercises I always teach two types; quick and slow. These two types will help different types of incontinence.
The quick ones will help keep us from leaking if participating in any physical activity, especially impact work, and protect us when laughing, coughing or sneezing! The slower ones will keep our bladder full until we can reach a toilet without leakage and to help you have an undisturbed night’s sleep. The slower exercises will also help the type of incontinence that is not always talked about - if you think you have finished going to the loo, wiped and then stand up and have some leakage. 
I have experienced all of the above! However, I know, as with any other muscle, if I do not work these then I will lose strength and suffer leakage!

This is the muscle I have been talking about recently, multifidus, this along with the pelvic floor and transverse abdominal muscles are your deeper core muscles which, if you strengthen, will help with sciatic pain but also painful hips and back which we suffer with during menopause. There are a lot of factors at play because of the decrease in oestrogen, HRT can help painful joints, but a lot of women cannot and do not want to go on HRT.  However even if you are on HRT it is a good idea to strengthen as HRT will not help with sciatic pain!  As I explained the other day it is great to do stretches but a REALLY good idea to strengthen to core. Having stronger muscles will help you feel stronger in you body, help with pelvic floor function and also will help with your mental health, #strongbodystrongmind is really true, I know from experience both personal and professional! #mentalhealth #pelvicfloor #HRT

The last few days I have been posting a few stretching exercises to help with lower back 😱 and hip pain which can affect women as one of many menopause symptoms. The stretching will DEFINATLY help with the pain. Sometimes it could be down to weak core muscles especially a deep muscle to include a muscle called The #Multifidus which sits around the spine, which will help with the “construction” of the spine and is overlooked a lot! 🤔Many women have been messaging me, complaining of #sciatica pain as well 😵. What happens if we do not keep our internal muscles strong 💪 and over time we might just damage some of our discs then our discs can protrude out of our spine and pinch the nerve which can cause the sciatic pain. So, there are a few things to do, keep mobile, lots of hip and spine mobility, also it is important to strengthen the core and that lower back area, therefore keeping the #vertebrae supported.  This is a great one to start you off on your strength journey. It is also totally safe if you have osteoporosis as your spine does not become compressed as in some other #backextentsion exercises, such as lying down back extension.  Do this as many times as you can. If possible, try 12 then do the stretches from previous days and some I am going to post this week and then do 12 more. Do this every other day.  It will not only help with strengthening your tummy but  also, it is great to keep our bones strong and protect against 💪💋#osteoporosis #backpain #backpainrelief #50plusandfabulous⠀

Another easy stretch to do for the hips and to help the lower back and any #sciatic pain. I do this every day so, if putting the foot on the thigh/knee is tough because of the flexibility in the hips and knees, then just straighten that leg (my right in the picture) and put your foot lower down. Sit tall and lean forward, you might have to adjust your upper body slightly and move left to right until you find the sweet spot! You should feel this in your bottom, hip and lower back on that raised leg side. Remember your muscles should be warm when you stretch, move around first for a few minutes.  #backpain #fabulousover50 #50andfabulous

A follow on from yesterday's seated stretch.  Again mobilise your shoulders and spine by shoulder rolls and moving around.  Tuck your chin under and separate your shoulder blades lower your shoulders away from your ears. Hold for at least 15 seconds,  longer the better.  Do this with the previous 2 stretches I posted and a few times per day and it will not only help with posture but feeling less stiff and open in the upper body. #posture #stretches

Painful joints especially lower back and hips affect many women during menopause. This stretch is a great one to do throughout the day to help with the pain. Please move around first so your muscles are warm, this would be great to do after lunch when you have got back to your desk! If you are feeling stiff, then just walk around for a few minutes or just do some squats. If you are on your feet for a long time you can even do this is the toilet! 😜🤭 Hold for as long as you can, if you really tuck your chin to your chest you will feel it all through your spine. Happy Saturday all! Being menopausal one must look at a lot of things to keep sane and happy; I have exercised moderately this week, ate well and managed to meet lots of deadlines, so all good, but realised I have not had much time to chill, so I am going to ease into the day slowly. Self-care isn’t all about spa breaks, I wish, or going out to a yoga class, sometimes meditation can come in the form of just being still and not listening to your husband or any other family member asking you “where is ….” And not to feel guilty! If I had a £ for every time Greg asks me where he has put his keys, phone, certain T shirt, shorts, belt.. . I would be a very rich woman, I did not ignore him, even though he says I am (apparently, he says, this photo is proof of neglect!) I am choosing to turn my attention on looking at new avocado recipes and switching off from the outside (and inside) world!  Sorry Greg looks like you are on your own for the hunt for you lost shorts! #avocado #selfcare #meditation #worklifebalance

Being menopausal one must look at a lot of things to keep sane and happy; I have exercised moderately this week, ate well and managed to meet lots of deadlines, so all good, but realised I have not had much time to chill, so I am going to ease into the day slowly. Self-care isn’t all about spa breaks, I wish, or going out to a yoga class, sometimes meditation can come in the form of just being still and not listening to your husband or any other family member asking you “where is ….” And not to feel guilty! If I had a £ for every time Greg asks me where he has put his keys, phone, certain T shirt, shorts, belt.. . I would be a very rich woman, I did not ignore him, even though he says I am (apparently, he says, this photo is proof of neglect!) I am choosing to turn my attention on looking at new avocado recipes and switching off from the outside (and inside) world! Lets talk back pain and #sciatica a request from one of our #teammeno's @mykenthomeandaway before you stretch make sure your muscles are warm, walking around or simple squats will do it, this along with the cat stretch will help however, what is really important is to strethengthen the muscle around the joint therefore  giving the joint better structure so therefore will not pinch the disc which is hitting the nerve which is causing he pain. So strengthening will treat the cause and stretching will help the symptom. There is a great exercise on the site which is totally safe and really great at strethening the lower back and core which you can do on a chair. Please do look in the link above where I am demonstrating this, it is also good for your bones as well Meno.

This is one of my favourite stretches.  It is great for posture,  it opens up the chest and is great to do first thing in the morning and throughout the day.  Take one leg forward push hips and chest forward hold for 15 seconds and swap legs and repeat. You can  vary the height of your arms depending on how you feel and where you feel is the most tight. Painful joints during menopause can be helped by daily stretching. Just make sure those muscles are warm first.  #painfuljoints

Good morning Meno’s! #Meditation 🙏 in some form should really be practiced during menopause.  Our list of things to do to keep happy and healthy should include becoming breathless 👟 for our heart💖 and mental health, resistance training to help to prevent #osteoporosis, stretching to help with painful joints and movement, but let’s not forget our poor minds🧠🧠 and #adrenal glands.  All the above really help me maintain sanity on a daily basis,😱 however we really need to practice some type of being “still”. You know that I am not one to site cross legs and chanting, but it is good to take some time out.  Find something that lets you switch off and adopt a positive mindset. I do not know why this is called the superman, I ALWAYS have called this the superwoman, 😜💪obviously! This is great one to start to strengthen the spine and core, when you are holding this position hold for 6 seconds and keep the tummy in really tight, slowly lower the hand and knee to the floor and when they both contact the floor then relax the tummy. The re-fix the tummy and do the same the other side, repeat this 24 times (12 on each side) O BTW notice my stretchy jeans? Also if you have a healthier strong muscle it will burn fat at rest. 💪💪 So therefore helping beat the menopause #bellyfat Do not worry if you cannot do this full plank, start off on your knees, put a pillow or towel under the knees if they are painful  pull your tummy into your spine and keep breathing! Hold for as long as you can, even if you start at 5 or 10 seconds, we all have to start somewhere! Start today!! The Lancet has just released a study on the benefits of exercise on #mentalhealth🧠🧠🧠 “Physical activity can help play a role in preventing mental health problems and improve the quality of life of those experiencing it. For example, there is an approximately 20–30% lower risk for depression and dementia, for adults participating in daily physical activity” (excerpt from Department of Health PA, Health Improvement and Protection, (2011). Start Active, Stay Active: A report on physical activity from the four home countries’ Chief Medical Officers. London: Department of Health). The study that we were discussing was a USA based study of over of 1.2 million people and found that people who exercise report having 1.5 fewer days of poor mental health a month, compared to people who do not exercise. #Cellulite! Yes, beauty certainly does come from within and I can tell from my left arm if my diet has not been great as I get cellulite on it!  I have had my studio for 12 years, we were originally a dedicated #powerplate studio. We had 4 plates and run classes, what fun! Now I have a private 1-2-1 studio and would never be without this amazing piece of kit.  When we did our classes, we would always do a seated cellulite massage at the end, I now use it with myself and my other Meno girls on front of thigh and arms! This on its own its not magic wand but it is 1 of many things that can help with skin tone as we get older. #dryskinbrushing before a shower is great – from the feet in upward strokes and towards the heart. Do this for around 3-4 minutes then, easy this weather, finish off with a cold shower. Along with cutting back on coffee, booze and not eating rubbish this will help with skin tone. I know from personal and 25 year’s professional experience! One third of your body's toxins are excreted through the skin and dry brushing helps to unclog pores and excrete toxins that become trapped in the skin. It will also bring oxygenated blood to the area which will also help with skin tone. Use a natural (not synthetic) bristle brush with a long handle so can reach all areas of your body. Happy Tuesday Meno’s! Weight training will not only help your bones, it will help your mental health too! If you follow me on Insta story (circle above 👆👆👆 ) you know that if I do not exercise I feel rather bonkers!!🤪 Heart health,💖💖 bone health and mental health 🧠 are all compromised during menopause and let’s not forget the weight gain. If you have a stronger healthier toned muscle it will burn fat at rest – perfect!! So therefore, helping keep the belly fat at bay.  I am doing this adapted bicep curl on a decline bench because of my bicep tendon operation last year, I am determined to be proud of my arms again! After 6 years I am happy to be weight training again and really feeling the benefit, I forgot how good you can feel.
