Once the “shame of Italy,” the ancient warren of natural caves in #Matera will easily transport you to a feeling of biblical times, now a trendy collection of cave hotels , and apparently 25% of Matera’s housing stock is available to rent on Airbnb, more than anywhere else in Italy.
In the 1950s #Matera was a slum city. Tens of thousands of people lived in terrible conditions, and malaria was prevalent. The prime minister at the time declared it was "Italy's shame". The solution was to evict everyone from the old town and build shiny new blocks. The Sassi were abandoned completely and left empty.
On 17 October 2014, Matera was declared Italian host of European Capital of Culture for 2019
Today it is a thriving tourist destination with boutique cave hotels , art galleries and the #MUSMA Museum of Contemporary Sculpture. Waking up to the sound of piano recitals and saxophone students rehearsing while aromas of coffee drift from the alleys into your Airbnb is worth at least a weekend but more of you have the time , now how is that for trip-advisor post ... loved this place !
