Happy World Turtle Day!
My favourite marine reptile, after 6+ years of diving I still get excited spotting turtles. I’m so lucky to have dived with them, participated in their conservation which includes protecting nesting turtles, beach cleans and turtle ID-ing for research.
Some of their biggest threats are ocean pollution (yeah the plastic bag looks like a jellyfish under water, a few times I’ve mistaken them too) and poaching of their eggs.
Malaysians, do you know there are markets that openly sell turtle eggs despite that it is illegal to possess turtle eggs according to Malaysia’s Wildlife Conservation Enactment? The sale and consumption of turtle eggs is banned in East Malaysia. Green turtles are endangered and hawkesbill turtles are critically endangered, according to IUCN. A recent Channel News Asia report has stated tourists from the surrounding region to Sabah are partly to blame for the rise in Turtle eggs as tour groups have requested their guides to sample some. It’s also worrying because there is major drive for tourism in Sabah. .
Please be aware, spread the word, be vigilant. Report those who offer to sell turtle eggs, educate yourself and others. We can’t afford to lose more wildlife thanks to human greed. - 4 days ago
