Before the bride walked down the aisle to The Four Tops' "I Believe in You and Me," there were the flower girls — one of them the groom's daughter, who skimped on her petal-tossing coming down the aisle. Maybe she believed her dad needed a little fanfare, too...which may be why when she got to her seat, she began tossing her white petals in the air with a gleeful squeal, a shower of blessings just for him. And he beamed, so tender and joyful, a memory burrowing itself into the sweetness of thousands braiding themselves through this day.
And then his bride was standing at the edge of the room, and through a veil of tears, he watched his future walk toward him. Grace and sunlight. The slow rising breath and smoothed out of ache of him. And she saw through the river of her eyes the dream that had swept her beyond her imagining and the steadiness that held her. This being found and known. And spun homeward.
They exchanged their vows, amid laughter, with the quiet lock of the warmest gaze and hope slivering bright through the air.
And there was grief — isn't there always? — and the space to honor it. But mostly, there was the only thing that saves us, again and again.
This is love this is love this is love.
