This is the last week to visit @ryanheshka 's solo exhibition Midnight Movie, which I curated for @antoniocolombogallery.
Regarding the eccentric yet adorable characters that populate his precious gouache and pastel works on vintage paper, Ryan Heshka says: «They are a motley crew of freaks, tragic figures, lovers, that don impossible costumes and personas to escape their inevitable reckoning». In light of this revelation, it's impossible not to think that midnight could also refer to the symbolic one of Doomsday Clock, created by a group of American scientists during the cold war to quantify the minutes that separate our planet from a catastrophic event: originally atomic war, while now the most concrete danger is climate change.
Heshka knows very well that the protagonists of his works can hardly evade the truth, yet he humors them, fully aware that in difficult moments the illusory dimension offered by art is sometimes the only comfort. - 56 minutes ago
