I saw a post yesterday by Spencer Nadolsky @drnadolsky which said:
“Eating less variety of foods may help you lose weight. Boring>exciting.”
Now I am usually a@big fan of @drnadolsky and what he has to say, but on this one I couldn’t agree less.
The success of any diet or nutrition plan, be it for weight loss, muscle gain or maintenance is consistency and sustainability, and the key to sticking with a thing is making it easy to do so. The enemy of consistency is boredom. The standard bodybuilder diet of chicken, brown rice and broccoli is simple and effective but anyone who has had to eat that 5 times a day for months at a time will tell you it is a hell of a lot harder than lifting hundreds of kilos of weight every day.
If your diet is boring then you are going to be more tempted to stray from it, and, once you have fallen if the wagon, it is going to be a lot harder getting back on if all you have to look forward to is the same old bland boring fare day in day out until you reach your goals...
More importantly, life is too short to eat boring food.
There are so many fantastic and delicious dishes you can make everyday that will meet any calorie or macro or restriction, and make your mealtimes a pleasure, why would you not want to eat well, even while eating less?
Time and again we are told that we should view our diet in terms of long term lifestyle change not short term quick fix, and we need to have a healthy relationship with food.
Surely in that case the more pleasure we can put onto our plates the better placed we are for the future? No-one should face a boring meal. Eat well, eat healthy, eat happy. - 36 minutes ago
