This epic shot was at the top of my to-do list the second I bought my Mavic Air. Here’s what I didn’t realize til I actually got to Mona Vale to take it:
- The pool looks extremely underwhelming from ground level. There are no gradients of blue water, no texture, really nothing interesting to see without getting in the air.
- You can end up with completely different images depending on how the tide is when you shoot. I shot this around mid tide (maybe slightly towards low tide), but if I’d shot 1-2 hours earlier I’d have had more waves coming in over the rocks surrounding the pool.
- This is what it looks like from 120m above, which is the maximum allowed height for drones in Australia (without approval). I’ve seen loads of drone shots where the entire little peninsula is in the frame (i.e. more of the area surrounding the pool), so... either they got approval from air traffic control or they broke the damn law - 1 hour ago
