Thesis Update: lots to consider moving forward after doing some field studies over spring break with the help of an advisor’s mother. Who knew that they grew up 17 minutes from my current home! Beyond thrilled that I gained insight, with their help, that will help me to bridge gaps in my growing research.
Seriously considering naming this body of work “From Farm to Fork”. I heard the phrase while speaking with Miriam Lewis, a North Carolina farmer. Crazy coincidence that I might have met her and some of her goats in 2007-2008 during 4H goat camp!

Every day is a learning day down on the farm - add clingfilm to your lambing kit!
This little black lamb managed to rupture his umbilical cord at birth, exposing his intestines and stomach. Thankfully for him we noticed within 60 seconds and quickly popped him into our lamb tub to keep him as clean as possible. The out of hours vets told us to roll him onto his back and wrap his abdomen in clingfilm. Clingfilm isn’t the easiest thing to handle at the best of times, let alone on a wriggly, soggy newborn lamb. We managed on our 2nd attempt, and Martin and Lydia (who had called in to see us after a posh Sunday lunch!) stepped in to drive the Lambulance the 13 miles down the road to the vets and entertain Jacob, whilst Rach held him as still as possible. Sue stayed on farm to successfully deliver his triplet siblings and prepare a fresh pen for them all.
We handed him over to the vet and after 15 tense minutes his hungry bleat greeted us - the surgery was successful in putting everything back where it was supposed to be.
The magical moment was returning him to his mum at home and seeing her get stuck straight into cleaning him up as though he had never been missing. Those that know sheep will understand how much of a miracle that is! Gold star for her!
