To maximize your muscle gain you should spend the majority of the year in a calorie SURPLUS, not a deficit.⁣

Because muscle gain is a much slower process than fat loss is.⁣

It's easily possible to lose 1 pound of fat a week (if you're very overweight you can go much faster than this).⁣

It's definitely NOT possible to gain muscle 1 pound of muscle a week. (If it were then it would be possible to gain 52 pounds of muscle in a year, which someone who is training naturally is never going to do.)⁣
⁣
The key to this is to control your RATE of weight gain using a MODERATE surplus (somewhere between 200-300 calories over maintenance is likely to the sweet spot).⁣

Did some straight barbell curls to start today's biceps workout. I've had Easter weekend of the gym to do some kayaking of the West coast of the Isle of Anglesey and also got to swim in the sea 9.5c. quite cold without a wetsuit.But it was great fun and I feel strong in the gym after a short lay off.

Tip for this is try to keep your elbows as flared up as possible. It’s not easy but makes a hell of a difference in the muscles being worked.

There is one ingredient that keeps people from reaching their fitness goals - consistency! ✨

No matter what we do in life we will not achieve the success we want unless we work at it day in and day out for months and months. The same goes for your exercise programs. You can have the best trainer in the world, and the best diet to follow, but if you do not stick with it consistantly, you will wind up spinning your wheels. This can be very frustrating for someone who is trying hit a certain goal.

I feel there are three main components in any exercise program to build lean muscle and lose unwanted body fat. These components are resistance training, cardiovascular exercise, and proper nutrition. All three are equally important on achieving your goals in fitness.

If one is not executed consistently, the other two will suffer and so will your progress. Don't get me wrong; to assume we can be perfect, 100% of the time will just be setting ourselves up for failure. Our goal should be to follow our programs the best we can day in and day out most of the time. The longer the time you stick with something the better you will become at it.

Dumbbell curls 3x10-12,
Barbell curls 3x15-20,
All with minimal recovery of 60-90 secs between sets

Comparing yourself to others you see on social media and being so discouraged that you don’t have this job or look a certain way or don’t live in that place. You get so caught up in comparing that it stunts your own growth - physically, mentally, emotionally. —

I think people sometimes underestimate just how damaging comparison can be in SO many aspects and domains of their life! I’m guilty of this too 🤷🏻‍♀️ —

Monday night #shoulderworkout - love doing these now. Don't do it every week but like to throw them in after a few shoulder / tri supersets. Managed 37.5kgs a couple times so went for 40kgs. Delighted! Gona try get these to 50+ this year. Superset these with Close-Grip Bench. You'll feel it! 🙃 💪🏼

An important this to note when training back is that, even before pulling the weight, you need to contract your upper back first just by pushing your shoulders back and pinching the shoulders together. That is step 1. Step 2 is the actual pulling of the weight.
•
But then there is a correct way to pull the weight. Most people pull with their arms which is wrong. You need to pull with the elbows because the job of the back muscles is to bring your elbows behind your torso.
•
Imagine that there is an imaginary bull's eye on your lower back right above your butt. As you are pulling your elbows back, try to get them to touch that imaginary bull's eye. Now obviously that's not possible... but the closer you can get your elbow to that point, the stronger the contraction.
•
As you are slowly lowering the weight back down,let your arms go in front first, THEN let your shoulder blades and upper back relax. This will give your the full stretch.
•
Watch how I am doing machine rows here in this video. Watch my upper back and elbows closely and try to do the exact same thing the next time you do machine rows or any other kind of rows.
•
As you get more experienced, you will be able to do both movements in one fluid motion. You got this!
