I'm not ready... This was photo 1 of a five second burst on my @gopro while hiking in Omis a month ago. I'm never ready for the first snap, and usually choose the fourth or fifth pic to share. But this shot reminded me of a belief I have about "being ready" in life.
I'm never actually "ready" for what's about to happen--the big moments in life. Like taking a trip, or starting a new relationship, or beginning a new job, or taking on a new role. I prepare, study, practice, role play, rehearse, and memorize...but I won't be ready, no matter what. Because life isn't an exact science. There's no perfect recipe you can duplicate under each new set of circumstances. You'll never be fully prepared for what's ahead. You just can't be.
But, you can be available, teachable, humble, and brave. And if you're those things, it won't matter if you're ready, you'll have everything you need to fail well, learn, grow, and sometimes you might even get it right.
I've decided to add in one more layer. People. Other people. To not do life alone. I need people to lean on, trust, and empower to work and serve alongside me. It's a non-negotiable! Collectively, we can do anything, ready or not!
That's why I absolutely LOVE working for @glateens and I can't wait to get to work in South Africa next month. After spending a week with fellow directors, training and planning and strategizing, the most valuable thing I came away with is knowing I'm not alone in this! I've got tools, yes. Plans and schedules, of course. But without the other people (HQ staff, fellow mentors and directors, local partners, my travel coordinator, and friends), I'd never succeed.
So, here's to another incredible summer of service learning, adventure, leadership development, cultural immersion, and personal growth!! Oh, and a whole lot of fun! - 5 hours ago
