THE TRUE MEASURE OF SUCCESS IS NOT IN COMPARING YOURSELF WITH OTHERS. SUCCESS IS DETERMINED BY COMPARING WHAT YOU HAVE DONE WITH WHAT YOU COULD HAVE DONE.
It was the end of term. A day dreaded by most students. For me, I had no fear. Branded on my report was the number 1. As usual, I rehearsed how I was going to present my report to my mother. I had a number of expectations. A pat on the back. A big hug. An extra piece of meat perhaps?
Unfortunately, this time around, none of these happened. The reverse was the case. After showing my mum my result. She looked at me. Her face stern and blank. "What are you proud of?". "You came first with 72%?" My mother's next statement was a defining one. She said "You will always think you are doing well, when you compare yourself with others. But you will never truly become all you can be." You see, because of the prevalent educational system in my country, I felt I was successful because I had better grades than other students. The challenge was, I was first in class, but not the best of me. My results were not a true testament of my ability.
This is why many think they are successful because they have what others do not. A bigger house than the neighbours. A more expensive car than your friend etc.
Conversely, you think you have failed because you cannot do what others are doing. You feel inadequate and inept by evaluating yourself with others. Yet nothing is farther from the truth.
Success is not what you have done compared to others. A fish will always feel inadequate by trying to fly and comparing itself to an eagle. But it will never be a successful bird. Also no matter how big a dog is, it cannot succeed as a tiger. It is not that the dog and the fish are failures, they are simply trying to be successful in the wrong thing.
Success, then is personal. In other words, success is not measured by comparing yourself with other people. That is competition. Success is born when you achieve the purpose for your creation.
Success is not about surpassing other people. In fact true success means you are your own competition. True success is the product of you becoming all God had in mind when He made you. - 19 minutes ago
