Enjoyed some restorative poses with the girls this afternoon. Step 1: write what you're grateful for on one side of the paper.
Step: decorate the other side.
Step 3: roll up (just like a yoga mat!) and tape closed at the seam.
Step 4: wrap a pipe cleaner around to make a strap for your yoga mat.

Station 1: yoga blocks, blindfolds & beanie babies to practice balance, build foot & ankle muscles all while working on communicating with our partner.

Station 2: partner yoga poses!

Station 3: Yoga Pose Mix-Up Game. Choose two yoga pose cards & work together to create a new combination pose. Give your new pose a name & viola!

Station 4: DIY Buddha board meditation. Construction paper, water & paintbrushes create a calm, peaceful mindfulness practice.
•
Station 5: breathing games! Students created mini obstacle courses for their ping pong ball or pencil to roll through using only their breath.

I worry sometimes my classes aren't fun or cool enough for my tween yoginis. I let doubt & worry gremlins creep into my brain & take root 👹

Today I decided to ask the girls what they wanted to do. Their answer? PARTNER POSES! Specifically they requested partner plank pose.

This pose requires communication, arm & core strength so I started the class with some spine & arm strengtheners, & then we played a game of "cannonball" where the girls lay head to foot & passed a ball to one another using only their feet. This gets their abs & communication muscles turned on before we paired up for partner poses.

The girls had a blast & asked for "harder" poses next week. Eeeek! Can't wait 😁

While I've loved so much about my transition to being a full time small business owner, I really miss seeing my incredible students every day. 
I'm thankful I recently had the opportunity to teach yoga to 6th-12th graders @elmsrockets and Lee Senior!  Every single class was incredible. 
Today I received a sweet package in the mail from these students.  In addition to being incredibly grateful for their kind words, I’m thrilled that so many of the students walked away understanding how yoga can positively help them manage their stress levels.  Student after student noted the stress in their lives and how they want to meditate more in order to manage that stress. 
Their yoga drawings are also adorable.  How can you not smile looking at those? 
Thank you to the Lee County Coalition for Families for inviting me into these schools.

What does Gratitude mean to you? 
To fill a world full of grateful adults we need to begin with grateful and compassionate children...
Wherever you are and however you’re celebrating today stop and look around. Take a mental note of all that you are blessed with starting with the smallest (really the biggest) things that are often taken for granted.

Day 15: We are thankful for our Breathing Ball (AKA Hoberman Sphere). I'm always looking for props or visual aids to help explain deep breathing. This ball does the trick & keeps my yogis engaged during breathing practice!

Begin by having the students watch you slowly breathe in & out while holding the ball. As you breathe IN open the ball & as you breathe OUT close the ball. If it is appropriate you can explain that as you INHALE the sphere opens - just like your lungs filling with air. As you EXHALE, the sphere closes - as all the air moves out of your lungs.

I was nervous, but I set my self up with all of my tools (I did some yoga, and a little meditation.  I got a cup of my fave tea, and had a super special Essential oil blend called Fulfill Your Destiny!) I have a confession to make. I didn't wake up one day and say I think I should teach children's yoga. My sister saw a training and thought it would be a great fit for me. She saw me in that role thriving. Flourishing. And so she gave me a weekend training as a gift. That's how it all started!
Someone else saw something in me that I didn't know was there.
Good Seeds Yoga 95 hr Children's Yoga Teacher Training at Twisted Tree Yoga runs January through June 2019.
One weekend a month, so it is less likely to interfere with your busy schedule.

Those days are usually connected to our brain believe it or not. When our brain is crowded and uncentered it sends that signal to our body, making it very difficult to balance. 
Your body can do it. It’s your mind you need to convince. 
So the next time you’re in a class and balance seems unattainable try re-centering your brain, take a few cycles of breathing, let go of whatever is on your mind and THEN attempt your balance pose again...

Yoga = union and when we recognize that we are all interconnected we can begin to see similarities rather than differences and love rather than dislike.

Day 4: Looking for an activity for morning meetings or to go along with your SEL curriculum? The Gratitude Game from @teachbesideme is a great small or large group conversation starter.

Grab some pipe cleaners, straws, pieces of paper, etc. in 5 colors (make sure there a few of each color). Each color represents a type of thing you are grateful for. These are the categories TBS created, but you can make your own.

To Play: First, each student picks an item. Then, have them sit quietly and take three deep breaths BEFORE showing them the categories.  Give the children a few moments to think on their own why they are grateful.  Finally, they can share with a partner, small group, or the whole class what they are thankful for.

If your school allows you could even play this game with skittles or gummy bears!

The moon has a very large symbolic significance in yoga mythology. The sun and the moon represent the two polar energies of the human body. In fact, the word hatha itself is often divided into its two constituent syllables, "ha" and "tha", which are then esoterically interpreted as signifying the solar and lunar energies respectively.

Benefits of Half Moon Pose:

Day 3: A great way to start talking about gratitude with young children is through books!  One of my favorite books to use in yoga class is “Bear Says Thanks” by Karma Wilson. The story is appropriate for Preschoolers - 1st graders and there are plenty of animals to mimic with yoga poses.
