5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT... FERTILITY FOODS
By Liz Feilden
Eating to support your fertility is about a lot more than just eating a bit more healthily. There is also no single fertility superfood (although Dr Google will try to convince you otherwise!), it’s about bringing your body back into balance and switch from firefighting, into reproduction mode.
This plays havoc with all of your hormones by spiking insulin levels, which has a knock-on effect on all other hormones. Keep sugar to a minimum in your diet, to keep your insulin levels stable. Make sure you include protein (meat, fish, eggs, nuts & seeds) and healthy fats (olive oil, oily fish, avocado, coconut oil) with all meals, along with fibre from wholegrains and vegetables.
2. Supporting digestion
Getting your digestion working well helps to remove toxins and ‘used’ hormones, makes sure you absorb all of the nutrients from your food, and keeps a good balance of healthy bacteria. Eat plenty of fibre from vegetables, pulses and unprocessed grains. Finally make sure you are drinking plenty of water to help keep the bowels moving –aim for 1.5–2 litres per day.
3. Support the liver
Hormones that have done their job need to be removed so they don’t keep circulating round the body. Choose organic food as much as possible, include foods such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale, watercress and rocket, and make sure you eat good quality protein at each meal as the liver needs this to detoxify.
They help prevent damage to a cell’s DNA-vital for a developing egg and sperm cell. Think of eating a rainbow-Especially red fruit and vegetables (tomatoes, grapes, blue and purple berries); orange (carrots, squash, oranges, mangoes) and green (kale, spinach, watercress and rocket). Also include onion, herbs/spices and dark chocolate.
5. Healthy fats
Great for hormone production, egg quality, and the developing embryo. The most important fat is omega-3 so aim to have some every day. Eat oily fish (salmon, mackerel) twice a week, include linseeds/flax seeds, chia seeds, walnuts, sesame seeds & macadamia nuts.
