I’ve never done a proper intro post. It’s kinda like having a BFF you hear from everyday but know nothing about. So why today? Because today isn’t an ordinary day - 20 yrs ago today I moved to the U.S. Oui! This point in my life where I’ve spent 20 yrs in France and 20 here. Speechless. If you’re just joining the conversation after 1,684 posts, here’s what you missed.
The real epiphany for some is that I’m actually French. Francophones DM me in English thinking I’m just one of those obsessed with France. Others expect I’m a woman named Frenchie like the Grease character – the name for girls is spelled Frenchy. I’m currently wondering if I should change my profile pic.
Having spent my formative yrs in Paris and the heart of the Loire country, I was eventually plucked from the hustle and bustle of the City of Lights and transplanted to the heartland of the U.S. in Milwaukee. The one responsible for all this one year after we met is pictured here. He sold Milwaukee to me by calling it “the Paris of the Midwest”. Never listening to him again – kidding, it’s a fun city.
For a brief period Champagne was replaced with Miller High Life yet my cheese cravings never went unsatisfied. 9 yrs in the WI dairyland, 5 yrs walking the streets of Boston, 3 in the southeast in Charlotte and now 3 exploring the nation’s capital - time to move back so my identity crisis can balance itself out? Tomorrow, I will have lived longer in the U.S. than France. Astonishing isn’t strong enough to describe my feelings – definitely kicking my butt.
20 yrs later and 5 of which as a dual citizen, I still try my best not to be rude to Americans [insert stereotypical French eye-roll], I like to drink bubbly while ironing, had my first “we” as Americans 2 yrs ago, I say “laddle” instead of “ladle” and also “ballgladder”, mistake “pose” for “pause”, always put the wrong emPHasis on the wrong sylLAble in “Alamo” and will not touch chex mix, root beer or beer floats.
Too long-didn’t read summary: more than just identity, French guy who doesn’t own a béret displays existential crisis after spending way too much time in the U.S. and is so dumbfounded reaches for piece of cake to shut up and move on. - 53 minutes ago
