The success Boeing 737 Classic becomes a a problem when it’s ubiquity makes makes it seem pedestrian when it’s anything but. From 1981 to 2000, Boeing produced 1,988 737-300s. This Boeing 737-300 registration B-2921 Serial Number 27286 wears the markings of China Southern Airlines circa 2012. It appears to have its engines removed.
Dual rotor, axial flow, high bypass ratio turbofans power the 737-300. CFM International makes the CFM56-3 engine. CFM56-3 first run in June 1974 44 years ago and is in the Airbus A320 family, Airbus A340-200, Airbus A340-300, McDonnell Douglas DC-8-70, the Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker and both the Boeing 737 Classic and Boeing Next Gen jet liners.
CFM International is a Franco-American joint venture between GE Aviation (US) and Safran Aircraft Engines. CFM International manufactured 32,645 high-bypass turbofans at $10 million a piece. The CFM56 engine variants offer bypass ratios ranging from 5:1 to 6:1 offering a thrust range of 18,500 to 34,000 pounds-force.
Known for its dependability, the CFM56 is at present the most used high bypass turbofan. 550 operators use more than 2,400 CFM56-powered jet aircraft generating a million flying hours every 8 days. Next year, this Turbofan will have a billion flying hours. It average time on wing is 30,000 hours before a first shop visit, with the current fleet record at 50,000 hours.
Boeing designed the 737 with wings closer to the ground thus the Turbofan needed modification. Thus CFM International rotated the engine accessory gearbox from the bottom of the engine at the 6 o'clock position to the 9 o'clock position. This gives the engine nacelle its distinctive "hamster pouch.” But more importantly, CFMI reduced the fan diameter which reduced the bypass ratio. The 737 Turbofans only get between 24,000 to 20,000 lbf.
