ACNE—the bane of my existence. 😫 .
.
When I was at my sickest, my skin was terrible. I was so embarrassed, I didn’t want to go anywhere or do anything because I was so ashamed of how I looked. I could barely recognize myself in the mirror and it was incredibly difficult for me. 😢
.
But here is what I’ve learned in the process:
.
Your skin is the largest organ on your body. It is also a direct reflection of what is going INSIDE your body.
.
You can buy all the acne creams in the world, but that is just putting a temporary bandaid over the  inflammatory mess going on INSIDE. 🌪
.
Healing my gut, reducing stress, and detoxing have been instrumental in healing my skin. Yes, I still break out, but I’m so grateful that it’s not nearly what it was. 🙏✨
.
And most importantly, I learned to accept myself—acne and all. My physical appearance doesn’t define who I am as a person and it has taught me to be more accepting and to be less critical of myself.💝
.

AUNT (noun): like a mom, only cooler and more fun. 💁‍♀️

This little guy has been my ray of sunshine on my darkest days. ☀️

When I was at my sickest, it was like he knew that I just needed some smiles, giggles, and silliness to make me forget that I felt really awful. It was like he knew that’s exactly what my soul needed. 👶🏻✨

Sometimes we just have to look around and be aware of the little things (or little people) that can be so healing. ✨

Healing holistically is NOT easy in a society that: .

B. Has been conditioned to believe that another medication is the solution for each and every ailment. 🙄

People will judge you for your decisions, they will make comments. And that is perfectly OK. You don’t owe them any explanation because only you know what is best for YOU. .
.
I don’t care if you judge me for what I eat or choose not to eat. .
.
I don’t care if you judge me for setting a necessary boundary. .
.
I don’t care if you judge me for the way I choose to live my life. .
.
I am doing this for me. ❤️

You don’t me setting necessary boundaries and working to leave my people pleasing ways behind. 🙅‍♀️

You don’t see me eliminating people and places that no longer serve me. 🙅‍♀️

You don’t see me protecting my time and energy to make more time for my own needs. 🥰
.
You don’t see me forgiving myself for every time I judged or criticized myself for not meeting my own unrealistic expectations. ❤️
.
You see, healing is SO much more than what appears the surface. Our thoughts, behaviors, and ways we navigate the world require as much time and attention (if not more) as the food we put in your bodies. ✨
.
The things you don’t see in this picture are more valuable to me than the physical, external, superficial ones you do. .

IT’S NOT WORTH IT. 🙅‍♀️

How do I know? Because I’VE BEEN THERE. .
.
One tidbit you may or may not know about me is that I was an elementary school teacher for 5 years. 👩‍🏫 I worked incredibly hard to get a job during the recession, landed a position in my dream school district, had a stable paycheck, amazing benefits, and an amazing retirement fund. .
.
BUT, I kept getting SICKER and SICKER. I was exhausted—physically and emotionally. .🥵
.
After my principal handed me a pink slip for the 3rd year in a row, I knew that this was a sign that it was time to leave, focus on my health, and change gears career wise. .
.
As a result, my health has dramatically improved for the better. .
.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved and adored my students and enjoyed using my creativity. But, I worked a 60+ hour work week, I constantly worried if my students had a safe home to go home to, and I lost several nights of sleep worrying that another student may attempt to end their life. (For all my teacher friends out there—you are freaking saints and you really don’t get enough credit for what you do!) .
.
What I learned in this experience was that no job is EVER worth your health. It took me 5 years to learn that, so I thought I would share it in case someone may need to hear it before it gets to that point. .
.
The truth is, I’ll always be a teacher at heart. 🍎👩‍🏫 Now, I get to teach adults how to bring the happiest, healthiest versions of themselves into the world. And for that, I am truly grateful. 🙏✨❤️

I honestly believe that only the STRONGEST people get diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. 💪

Having Hashimotos has taught me more about overcoming obstacles than I otherwise would have never learned. Navigating life with an illness that no one can physically see and that many do not understand is NOT for the faint of heart. ❤️
.
It takes absolute courage, strength and bravery to wake up everyday and live our lives appearing to be “normal” on the outside, but battling wounds on the inside. 💝
.
Despite these wounds, we show up everyday, doing our best, putting one foot in front of the other, breathing, and most importantly—HEALING. And that my friends, is a WARRIOR. 🔱

CONFESSION: I deleted my last post  stating: “I regret eating vegetables.” - Said no one ever. .

The truth is, I really didn’t think this one through prior to posting. 🙈 I, myself have sensitivities to some vegetables, especially those high in sulfur. Those of us with autoimmune diseases have different sensitivities to different foods (including many vegetables). Due to bio-individuality, my previous statement does not align with my personal values and core beliefs. .
.
Shout out to my friends who know how to call me out (in a respectful and loving way) @empoweredautoimmune and @the.holistic.ginger. 💕
.
And shout out to myself for making a mistake and being human. #socialmedialfail 🙈🤷‍♀️

As humans, many of us feel safe in the expected, planned, and controlled. (Guilty! 🙋‍♀️) As much as we try to resist change, there it is, staring us right in the face YET AGAIN. 👀

Here’s the thing, we really don’t have as much control over things as we think we do. #controlisanillusion .

Getting a chronic illness for me was completely unexpected, unplanned, and out of my control. BUT,  it has taught me the power of RELEASING control and embracing change. When I look back, everything has unraveled exactly as it was supposed to. ✨

Had I not developed an autoimmune disease, I would have never: .
.
💪 Learned to take better care of myself .
.
🌱 Pursued my passion to become a Holistic Health Coach .
.
👯‍♀️ Found my tribe and soul family .
.

Don’t get me wrong, nutrition is an important component of healing, but it’s not the end all be all. .

You can have the “perfect diet” and still feel like crap. Why? Because other elements in your life are off balance. Here are a few questions to consider: .

🌎 Am I passionate about my career and my purpose in the world? .
❤️ How are my relationships with others and with myself? .
💰 How do I feel about my finances? .
🥰 Do I make time for myself or am I putting everyone else first? .

Someone recently asked me where to start on their healing journey and I had to think back to the beginning of mine. Stress was the one thing that was preventing me from fully allowing my body to heal. I was eating all the right things and my body was still SCREAMING at me to make changes. .

“Aw, I feel so bad for you.” Is a common phrase I hear from others when I am out at places where there is nothing but processed foods and a gluten frenzy nightmare. ☠️🙅‍♀️
.
I always tell people not to feel bad because the truth is, I DON’T FEEL BAD FOR MYSELF. .
.
Everything is a choice. What we put in our body is a CHOICE. I can still eat pizza, cupcakes, and other Standard American Diet foods, but I choose to make MY OWN version of what feels best for MY body. I don’t feel deprived or like I’m missing out on ANYTHING. .
.
Just a side reminder: If someone makes a comment about the way you choose to eat, it’s typically an insecurity about their own eating habits. Just sayin... 🙄
.
This is me giving you permission to eat what feels best for YOUR body despite the judgements from others. .

I’ve been getting a lot of messages about food, so I thought I’d start with one of my main non-negotiable NEVER foods—gluten. 🍞 .
Going gluten free is not just for Celiacs disease. Gluten is the name for the proteins found in wheat, rye, and barely. These proteins can cause serious inflammation in your gut which in turn, wreck havoc on your immune system, no matter what chronic illness you have. 🙅‍♀️
.
The market is SATURATED with gluten free products because food companies pay attention to consumer behavior and heath “trends.” Many companies are slapping a GF label on products that are in fact filled with TONS of chemicals that contribute to more inflammation. 🙅‍♀️
.
So what do you do? If your new to this whole gluten free thing, here is the biggest trick: READ THE INGREDIENTS. Better yet, stick to whole foods that don’t even have a label. 🙌 .
.
The good news is, there are more and more products becoming  available on the market now with cleaner ingredients. 🎉 .
.
Rule of thumb: If you can’t pronounce, read, or recognize an ingredient on a package, your body won’t recognize it either. 😵

Did you know that writing and expressing gratitude can shift your physical, mental, and emotional health? 🙌

Look, I totally get it. Some days it can be so dang hard to look and see what we are grateful for when we are battling a chronic illness. But what I have found is that there is ALWAYS something in our lives that we can appreciate. ✨
.
Gratitude does not mean dismissing our emotions or other crap that is going on in and around us...because let’s be real, it’s so much easier to write out that list. It’s acknowledging the things we have in this very moment that bring us peace and joy. 💕☮️
.
Here are my top 3 things I’m grateful for in this moment: .
1️⃣ I am grateful to live in San Diego, CA where the weather is beautiful, there is an abundance of healthy food, and a culture of health minded individuals. ☀️
.
2️⃣ I am grateful for all the healing my body has done and continues to do. 💪
.
 3️⃣ I am grateful for the love and support from the autoimmune warriors in this community as well as the many “Instagram friends” whom I’ve never met in real life (but have every intention of meeting one day 😘).
.

I’d like extra avocado with a side of self-preservation. 🥑🥰 .

So many things and people require our attention on a daily basis and we can over-extend ourselves without realizing how much of an effect this has on our mind and body. 🤯 .

When I start to feel spread thin or like I’ve taken on too much I like to use my new favorite word—NO. ❤️

It makes sense that it is one of my most viewed posts due to the fact that over 50 million Americans have a thyroid disease making this medication one of the most  frequently prescribed out there. 🦋

I chose to share my story because  in my opinion, there are too many thyroid warriors (myself included) who get immediately thrown on levothyroxine and sent on their merry way hoping to feel better. 🦋
