HOMECOMING (2019) MOVIE REVIEW
“Homecoming” is a 2019 straight to Netflix concert film/documentary directed by celebrity singer Beyoncé Knowles. This film showcases Beyoncé’s famous Beychella performance with added commentary by Beyoncé herself of the challenges she overcame perform the concert alongside, statements about race and gender politics in America. While I’m definitely not the target audience for Beyoncé’s music and didn’t really have any expectations going into this, I thought that this film was a blast to watch and something I could revisit in the future. The first part of the film I would like to applaud is the amount of effort put into the concert. Almost every technical aspect is incredible especially the sound mixing, the lighting is sharp and unique, the choreography is well synchronized and fluid, and Beyoncé’s singing and dancing are near perfect. On top of this, the variety of different camera angles used are incredible and, the use of crowd reaction shots and black and white, add more energy and meaning to the concert itself. Furthermore, the commentary added by Beyoncé never feels out of place, and is often highly informative and, helps add an emotional punch to the film. It’s also worth noting, how incredibly entertaining and well paced this concert is. The incredible performances, help this concert never feel overblown or boring. The only part of “Homecoming” I didn’t like is a certain technique used that added a grainy look to some parts of the concert. I found this to be overused and, sometimes extremely distracting. Other than this, “Homecoming” is a fantastic concert film, which is technically impressive and, packs an insightful, emotional punch.
