If you’ve seen heirloom carrots, you’ve probably seen the purple and yellow varieties. Orange didn’t emerge until the 16th century. It was then cultivated in the 17th century by Dutch farmers as a tribute to William of Orange. He didn’t have any particular love of carrots, so it was a weird tribute, but hey, at least the people aren’t rebelling, right? 🤷🏻‍♂️

An ornate original 1924 Prohibition Prescription for Whiskey...Oi (pint bottle, doc changed it from a quart/initialed changed)...Sig Ziii q 4 hrs (3 ounces every 4 hours)! This prescription was used for a short period of time during the Prohibition, between 1924 and 1925.
From the days of Al Capone, speakeasies and moonshine this was the only legal way to drink liquor in the US!

The whiskey was prescribed for Henry Paul, by Dr. Frederick Lobb, on August 25, 1924 and was filled the same day by Pharmacist, Charles H. Freethy, of Hawley, PA.

As requsted by @ivortap, our focus today is Russia! The Red Square is the largest and most famous square in Russia. It is a massive tourist attraction for all visitors to Moscow. Standing in the Red Square, you can see the most significant buildings in the capital: the Kremlin, GUM department store, the State History Museum, Lenin's Mausoleum and of course, St Basil’s Cathedral.
The Red Square has always been the main square of the city, and its history dates back to the 1490s when a new red brick Kremlin was built in Moscow. The east side of the fortification was vulnerable since it was not protected by the rivers nor any other natural barriers. This area outside the walls was cleared in order to create a field of fire for shooting, and became Red Square.

August 24, 1917: The London Gazette announced that "The King has been pleased, by Letters Patent under the Great Seal, to create and institute an Order of Knighthood to be styled ‘The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire’". "The first British Empire investiture took place at Ibrox Park in Glasgow on 18 September 1917, during the King’s visit to the shipyards and industrial plants of central Scotland. The ceremony opened with the presentation of GBE insignia to Lord Strathclyde, the chairman of the Scottish War Savings Committee, while the crowd of thousands cheered when the King handed the medal to a munitions factory worker, Lizzie Robinson. Most of the other founder members were invested a week later at Buckingham Palace." More from The London Gazette archives: https://bit.ly/2BLyL8r

Lykourgos is the reason for Sparta as we know it (along with the propulsive Messenian Wars). He was the uncle of Charilaos, who would later become king. In the eighth century (BC), when Charilaos was just a baby, Lykourgos rejected the throne and instead began an even greater service to his nation: he enacted a novel, revolutionary constitution that forever changed the state of Lakedaimon and made her what we call "Sparta". Without these reforms, she would have just been another polis of Greece. But thanks to Lykourgos she became an indomitable power and the embodiment of virtue and perfection. Her constitution was the basis for a state that had no flaws (for all intents and purposes). It is said that he travelled far and wide (certainly to Crete, possibly as far as India) to learn the best of humanity and assemble his leanings into one great creed. That creed, or rhetra, became the Spartan one. The profundity of the creed is attested by its Delphic approval, for Lykourgos (much as Socrates undertook his journey centuries later) implemented his constitution at the behest of the Oracle of Delphi (or it may be that the god gave his seal of approval). And thus of Heaven itself. So, looking beyond an historical lens, it might well be argued that the Spartan creed is based in the divine, that its pillars are something beyond the dirt beneath our feet. That there is transcendence in the Lakedaimonian way, and that it is the power of Heaven that made them invincible (if you look at Spartan society, excluding the helot class, their world really was a Heaven on Earth, but more on that later). It is said that Lykourgos, after he had enacted the reforms, told his people that he must travel to Delphi, to see the oracle, and until then, they must agree to live by his constitution. He never returned. And thus, was born... Sparta. -

Walt Disney at the opening of the first Disneyland in Anaheim in 1955. ⠀
⠀

The opening ceremony was held on July 17, and was held by the future US president, Ronald Reagan. Walt Disney put his whole soul into the creation of the park. The imagination of the artist and the enthusiasm of all the creators of the park were embodied in the magical world of cartoons and fairy tales, where Mickey Mouse and his friends live. ⠀
⠀
Disneyland quickly became a US attraction and a favorite family vacation destination. No wonder Disneyland's official nickname is the happiest place on Earth.
⠀

Bersaglieri volunteers and german gebirgsjäger in Slovenia, 30 March 1944 🧗🏻‍♂️🏃🏻‍♂️
~
Have you ever heard of the italian Bersaglieri? They're a speciality of the infantry corps of the italian army; they were created in 1836 by General La Marmora. 🇮🇹
~
The Bersaglieri are well known for their feathered hats called "vaira" and their quick step. The feathers have no specific meaning, they simply provide some shadow so that the Bersagliere can aim at the enemy even in the Sun. ☀️👁
~
Erwin Rommel once said: "The german soldier has impressed the world, however the italian Bersagliere has impressed the german soldier".🦊
~
I have a challenge for you: 180 steps per minute... while playing a wind instrument! 🎺

Kolkata, previously called ‘Calcutta’, is a city beyond brick and mortar. With an enticing history, it is also one of the major metropolitan cities of India. ‘The city of joy’, is driven by emotions and love for its rich heritage, art and culture, festivals, food and football. Kolkata, the capital of the State of West Bengal, has as a chaotic sweetness to even her daily mundane.
In 1698 Job Charnock, an employee and administrator of the English East India Company formed Calcutta by joining three villages, Sutanuti, Kolkata and Gobindapur, which he bought from the local landlord Sabarna Chowdhury. Calcutta was the capital of British India from 1772 to 1911. #kolkata #happybirthdaykolkata #westbengal #historyofbengal #historyfacts #india
