Clove Syzygium aromaticum (L.) essential oil is distilled or cold pressed from the bud of the plant, although the entire plant can be distilled and used if not being used for therapeutic purposes. Phenol eugenols make up about 75% of the essential oil. “The phenol eugenol has been shown to have antioxidant and antiviral actions” (Petersen, 2016). According to Petersen (2016), clove essential oil has the following therapeutic actions “analgesic, anti-aging, antiarthritic, antibacterial, anticarcinogenic, anti-clotting, anticonvulsant, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiobesity, antioxidant, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antiviral, aromatic, bactericidal, carminative, insecticide, irritant, rubefacient, spermicidal, stimulant, and stomachic”. These properties make the essential oil useful for a variety of purposes. The recommended daily dose for clove is up to three drops, three times a day for up to two weeks, if taken internally. If using the essential oil in a bath, one drop should not be exceeded. If irritation occurs try diluting one drop of clove essential oil in one tablespoon of sweet almond oil. Always conduct a skin patch test before using any essential oil in a bath. Adding this essential oil to a full bath would be beneficial for the entire body. The antiaging properties would be helpful for skin, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties are helpful for muscles. I would recommend using this oil in the morning due to its stimulant properties. *** Cautions and contraindications of the essential oil are to avoid if the person has liver disease, do not use more than the recommended length of time as it may cause liver toxicity. Avoid if pregnant or using homeopathics. Always conduct a skin patch test before using, if there is irritation try cutting the amount of essential oil being used in half. This oil does have GRAS status in the United States.
