𝘈𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘺?, he asked.
𝘐 𝘢𝘮, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘐'𝘥 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘦𝘳, I replied. 𝘈𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶?
𝘐 𝘢𝘮, he answered.
𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘦𝘳?
This short exchange between Patrick and I tells you a lot about us.
To highlight a few of his many swoon-worthy qualities:
He's quick to celebrate the wins and successes
Content is his default setting
He's great at helping me find the bright spots when it's hard to find any
Did I mention he does the laundry!?
I, on the other hand, struggle consistently with stopping to celebrate contentment.
Sure, things are great, buuuuut I want them to be even better! TBH, this is something I've struggled with, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘰𝘯, for as long as I can remember.
️ Set a goal. ️ Pursue said goal wholeheartedly. ️ Achieve said goal. ️ Look ahead for the next goal. ️ Repeat.
And while achievement, growth, drive and passion are wonderful, if we don't learn to pause and enjoy the journey, we rob ourselves of the experience of life!
Do you struggle with the practice of choosing happiness and contentment too?
If so, here are a few habits that have helped me choose happiness and contentment over 𝘣𝘪𝘨𝘨𝘦𝘳, 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳, 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦:
1️⃣ Celebrate the wins. No matter how small. Train your brain to look for the successes.
2️⃣ Pause and regroup when you're feeling down or critical. Stop, breathe and remind yourself of what's going well.
3️⃣ Take time to appreciate the present moment. Don't let your brain space be taken hostage by things that need to happen or have happened. Be still and enjoy the now.
4️⃣ Prioritize the small things with equal intentionality as the big things. Walking with a loved one, spending time breathing in fresh air, taking a bubble bath. These things often feel less important than the other things on our to-do list but nothing could be further from the truth.
What are you pausing to enjoy and celebrate today? Tell me yours and I'll tell you mine. 🏻🏻🏻 - 0 seconds
