I always joked that I didn’t know if Dexter was of profoundly low intelligence, or if he really was THAT chill.
We got him out of a litter that was never supposed to happen.
They’d have gone to the shelter or have been put down if they didn’t find homes.
We chose him because he was the only puppy who not only let us hold him on his back, but would actually curl up against our forearms and go right to sleep.
He was never our ball of fire - that was Samantha’s place.
Until one day, in the middle of cooking dinner, nothing in particular happening, I had to turn off the burners and go to my bathroom - where I immediately had the most devastating panic attack that I can ever recall.
I started standing, leaning over, and ended on the floor curled into a fetal position, it was terrifying.
This dog, our Dexter, laid nose to nose with me until I could breathe again.
Even once I could breathe, he didn’t leave my side for hours.
Turns out he is highly intelligent and keenly intuitive.
He automatically becomes whatever we need at any given time, and most of the time all we need is constant, quiet companionship.
He is absolutely amazing.
I smudged us both that evening (as well as the rest of the house), gave him extra cuddles, and fell asleep on the floor with him.
I can’t even believe that mankind is lucky enough to have been given these friends.
They are a gift of pure love.
