Mornings in Jenin follows four generations of Abul Heja family through the tranquils, tests, love and loss of the forceful birth of one State, Israel, by violent defacing and displacement of another ancient nation, Palestine.
Filasteen, in Arabic.
This is the first mainstream novel in English to explore life in post-1948 Palestine.
We travel through an unforgiving history along with Hasan and Dalia's three children: Yousef, Ismaiel, and Amal. The toddler, Ismaiel is surreptitious snatched from Dalia's arms by a begrudged Israeli soldier during a military evacuation. He gives the child to his wife, a Polish Holocaust survivor, & he is renamed David. Many years hence, David joins the Zionist army, and confronted with the splitting image of himself in the mirror of his elder brother Yousef's face, he goes on to beat him with no mercy.
Meanwhile Palestine is ravaged, and the meek resistance from the refugee camps where entire generations live inside shanties build from scrapes of memories, and the young throw stones as easily as they throw away their lives, is dubbed a "terrorist hub"
The world looks on, as their land is renamed Israel, their very soil turned brown from soaked blood, their lives turned into extended death sentences.
As readers, each one of us has moments of staggering reflection.
For me, it was when after yet another Israeli invasion on a refugee camp, one mother desperately prays:Oh Allah, help us get through this life. "This life", for In Shaa Allah, the next will be immensely rewarding for them.
For although the characters in this book are fictitious, Palestine is not, nor are the events and figures in this story. BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS
1)Kite Runner, Khalid Hosseini
2)The Lemon Tree, Sandy Tolan
3)Once Upon A Country, Sari Neusseibeh
