There are moments in life that are so simply and perfectly awesome and beautiful, that it is difficult to explain them in words. This morning, I was part of one of those moments.
To say that I am proud of my brother and sister-in-law, Joey and @gmholand_ , would be a massive understatement. For roughly the past 2 years, they have been working with @operationfinallyhome RGV to raise the money and resources to be able to donate a mortgage-free home to a service member wounded as a result of service to our country.
As Joey explained this morning, it was important to him that Operation Finally Home not come out of pocket on this project--so he and Gio set out to raise the money and get donations from subcontractors they work with regularly, to get this house built.
Joey read off a list of donors--and I know that @cityofmcallen , the McAllen Housing Finance Corp (thanks to the help of Brad Benter), and @heb were major contributors to this project. (This is just the beginning--they're already planning for the next one, so if you'd like to donate, please let me know!) So...this morning, we lined the street in front of the new home's site, and cheered as @usmarinecorps CPL Miguel Simental and his beautiful family arrived and were surprised to learn that they were being given this new home!
Even with all the times I watched shows like Extreme Makeover Home Edition, I could never have been prepared for the emotions of the morning. Watching the caravan arrive, cheering, watching CPL Simental's face as he realized what was happening...it was all simply and perfectly awesome and beautiful.
In a world that seems to be so consumed by greed and self promotion, what a blessing it was to spend a morning celebrating a man and a family so filled with unselfish devotion to our country and our freedom. What a blessing it was to be part of this beautiful community in McAllen, Texas! - 50 minutes ago
