This post is really just about highlighting how important it is to get your tack checked regularly.
Over winter, the exercise regime becomes less and horses drop of weight and change shape. Petals saddle (I knew it needed checking) seemed OK when I first put it on, I was OK while she was acting an idiot going past a field with some dog walkers in and it was OK when I mounted from the ground after having to hop off to open a gate.
What wasn't OK is when she got excited on a usual canter stretch and threw in a cheeky buck. I felt the saddle shift forwards onto her shoulders and she began dancing around to show her discomfort. It wasn't possible to dismount and see to the saddle so I had no choice but to ride home with the saddle far too far forward. You can see by the sweat marks on her withers and shoulder just how far it had slipped forward.
Bless her heart though, for all her faults and craziness, she knew that I knew what the issue was and she did not try and throw me off, nor did she bolt for home. ️ Another horse may not have been so forgiving and things could've ended very differently.
I thank my lucky stars everyday that I have Petal.
She really is my batshit crazy, lives in her own little world oddbod, but her honesty shows though when something as simple as a buck could've been so different.
Please everyone, make sure you get the saddler out regularly to get your tack checked.
I know I won't be using the saddle until it is checked!
