A lot of us anticipated this one but then mix reviews followed this film and you begin to wonder for a bit.
But there are films you have to see for yourself and be the judge. This is one of them.
US tells the story of Adelaide Wilson(Lupita Nyong'o) who returns to the beach front home she grew up in, bringing her family along for a cool summer. Adelaide is super tense, trying hard but failing to enjoy what seems like a normal vacation. Her playful laid back husband Gabe (Winston Duke) tries repeatedly to make her relax & enjoy the moment. But Adelaide's fears are justified when a family appears in their driveway in the middle of the night. It escalates really fast when the intruders are angry doppelgangers of the Wilson family, coming for blood. It becomes a fight of Us vs Them, a survival of the strongest family.
By now you may think you have a picture of what the film is about but believe me, you are not even close to the intricacy that is US.
The film is a thriller/ horror story but it is not your average everyday kinda film that falls in this genre.
First it started a bit slow, don't know if it was intentional to draw us in or put us off. Then it quickly picks up pace then escalates to a level that leaves you asking yourself questions like "what the heck am I watching". One thing you should know by now, is that US is not conventional neither is it for everyone. It uses a lot of metaphors and symbolism to pass across a message that might get lost on some.
The truth; Apart from the slow beginning and the AC in the cinema freezing my bones to stupor, I did enjoy US. It's my kinda film. And I always crave outside the box films that not everyone gets. I think Jordan Peele succeeded with this movie. We are actually the social experiment not the other way round. The eerie soundtracks were marvelous.
BTW: Adelaide's doppelganger & that of her daughter were a delight to watch. The voice, the expression, the twisted smiles(Lawd). This is one film I would want to see again, just so I can take it apart and see into the writer's mind.
I would recommend it for unconventional film watchers or anyone looking to get some chill down the spine.
