15/20 Reforestation is one of key long term solutions to prevent droughts and preserve habitats in agriculture intensive areas. Current legislation in São Paulo and Minas Gerais states requires 20% of land in rural areas to be preserved. In the Amazon, it can go up to 35%. But this approach does not do much good in areas where significant numbers of native ecosystems have already been lost. Agroforestry, a unique approach to agriculture, combines stewardship of land by reintroducing native tree species, planted together with fruit trees, such as avocado (pictured). Planted in rows of bananas with rows of vegetables in between, trees go on to provide shade and nutrients for other plants and serve as a habitat for other species. .
