Passion fruit a/k/a lilikoi is an extremely resilient and resourceful vine as I found out after I planted one in my back yard here on the Big Island. It's starting to bear fruit now, and the first one ripened this morning. I scooped out the fruit and found it far more balanced in flavor that you typically find in the markets, where the fruit tends towards the sour end of the spectrum.
Rich in antioxidants it is a natural immune booster, mainly due to the presence of vitamin C, carotene, and cryptoxanthin. In addition these antioxidants assist in the prevention of conditions like cancer, heart disease and pre-mature aging.
The other amazing thing (and the list is so extensive that you really have to pick and choose!) is the benefits to circulatory health. The potassium in the fruit serves as a vasodialator, reducing overall strain on the heart and tension in the blood vessels. Copper and iron exist in the fruit and increase the production of red blood cells. This combination allows for healthy oxygenated blood to flow easily through the body to areas where it is needed, stimulating metabolic activity in the organ systems. In essence it optimizes the productivity and efficiency of the cardiovascular system! - 2 hours ago
