Feet should be wider than hip width, and toes should be pointed outwards.

Brace your core and lower yourself down while sitting your hips back and getting as low as you can. As you squat, drive your knees outwards.

Come back up half way and then squat back down before coming back up, and squeeze your glutes at the top.

Avoid thrusting your hips forward too much as this will cause you to hyperextend your back, and could lead to lower back pain.

Breathe in on your way down and breathe out when you reach the top.

SNAP PEAS WITH FETA AND MINT
This simple side dish is popular at one of Blais's restaurants and is a great study in contrasts. The sweet, charred, crunchy snap peas play nicely with the salty, briny, crumbly feta.
SERVES 6
3 cups mayonnaise (see Note)
¼  cup hot paprika
Juice of 1 lemon
2 tablespoons canola oil
2 pounds snap peas, trimmed
½ cup loosely packed fresh mint leaves
1 cup crumbled feta cheese

In a mixing bowl, stir the mayonnaise with the paprika and all but 1 tablespoon of the lemon juice. Cover and refrigerate the aioli for up to 12 hours, or set aside to use very soon. If it is refrigerated, let it warm up to cool room temperature before using.

Heat a large skillet over high heat. When hot, pour in the oil. Add the snap peas and blister for about 30 seconds to char on one side. Turn over and char for about 30 seconds on the other side.

Toss the snap peas with the aioli and mint. Serve topped with the feta and drizzled with the reserved 1 tablespoon lemon juice.

Note: To make your own mayonnaise for the aioli, put 2 large egg yolks, the paprika, and the lemon juice in a blender. With the motor running, pour about 4 cups olive oil into the pitcher, blending until the mixture emulsifies to a mayo-like consistency. Season to taste with salt.

Working out alone in the gym can be a daunting process for many women. If you’re someone who is hesitant about training alone in the gym due to fear of being judged; fear of going in the weights area where it’s usually predominantly men working out; not knowing what to do; or how to use the equipment, then I have a few tips for you! 
___
1️⃣ Workout with a friend - this will help to reduce the nervousness of going to the gym alone, as you can both support each other. Plus, you also get to spend some time with your friend. 
2️⃣ Plan your workouts - one of the most common issues is not having a plan in place of what training you will do; whether that’s upper or lower body or full body workout. Having a session that’s already pre-planned reduces the amount of time spent faffing about in the gym and ensures you get an effective and efficient workout. 
3️⃣ Get educated - I don’t mean go and do a qualification in fitness. However, watching videos from some great coaches of how to do exercises correctly will help increase your understanding and knowledge, and in turn improve your confidence in executing them. 
4️⃣ Workout in a group - if you and some of your friends/family are members of the same gym group, why not train together and make it a fun workout? It doesn’t have to be a long workout, you can do a session containing a few supersets or do a circuit of 5-6 exercises and put 30 minutes on the clock. 
5️⃣ Hire a professional - if you’re really not feeling confident to tackle the gym, it may be a good idea to join a fitness company or hire a personal trainer, so that they can help you get kickstarted and over time your confidence will grow to the stage where you feel comfortable in going to the gym on your own.

Firstly, take me back! I can’t believe it’s been almost 6 weeks since my retreat, what a weekend and what a group of women. The vibe, the support, the laughs, the cheering each other on... just wow. I wish you could bottle it all up, it’s what every busy, overwhelmed woman needs. Time to rest and reflect, time with others, time out from life and time to focus on you. I swear these women gained as much from each other as they did from me, it was amazing to see (and feel). I’ve enjoyed a little down time following this retreat as I’d put so much into it following my recent tough few months, but now I’m feeling ready and excited to begin working on my next one. Depending on what you have eaten, how much you have eaten, if you’re on your period or not, or how hydrated you are, you may or may not suffer from bloating. Everyone suffers from bloating at some point or another, and it will go down! As you can see, I too suffer from bloating.

If you experience bloating regularly and find it a painful experience, it’s advisable to get seen by your GP.

Don’t punish yourself for what you’re body looks like in the moment when that doesn’t reflect the reality.

What is it?:
Taurine is an amino acid that occurs NATURALLY in your body, and can also be found in meat, fish, dairy products, and more commonly known, in energy drinks. Despite popular opinion, it does not come from bull urine or semen in energy drinks; that is a myth. 
_
Benefits:
Taurine may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, may help people with diabetes by potentially reducing blood sugar levels, may help improve performance by reducing fatigue and decreasing muscle damage. 
Taurine helps form bile salts which is important for the digestion process, it helps keep you hydrated, regulates minerals in your body like calcium, supports your overall functioning of the CNS etc.

Negatives:
Research has not shown any negative side effects of consuming taurine in the recommended dosage which is 500-2000mg. However, energy drinks also contain caffeine, and caffeine in large quantities is not recommended, particularly for those who suffer from anxiety and high blood pressure as it can elevate the heart rate.

Opinion:
If someone wants to drink an energy drink, that’s ok. If someone wants to drink a fruit juice, that’s ok too. Making uninformed comments about people’s nutrition choices without knowing their situation is NOT ok. 
For someone who is looking to lose fat, consuming zero calorie energy drinks may be a better option rather than consuming a smoothie, which contain considerably higher calories and therefore may not suit their goals. On the other hand, some people may just like the taste of the energy drink and consume them for that reason alone. Just because something doesn’t conform to society’s acceptable version of health, doesn’t mean that it’s bad for you.

Doing front and back of the body exercises is cool, but don’t neglect lateral exercises. Lateral lunges are a great exercise to work on any leg imbalances you may have, and targets your quads, glutes, hamstrings, adductors, abductors and your hip flexors.

1. Make sure both feet are facing forwards. Step out with one leg while sitting your hips back and getting as low as you can. 
2. Make sure your back is flat when doing the exercise and your core is engaged. 
3. Push off the bent leg and return to the top before repeating on the other side.

Making progress in training doesn’t happen in a flash, it takes time. Sometimes, it may take you a few weeks to progress with some exercises. However, it may take you months or years to progress with other exercises. Regardless of the time frame, keep being consistent in your approach because practice will make you better!

When I first started training, I could only hold a plank for a few seconds. With practice and consistency, my timing has significantly improved.

If you’re someone who compares yourself to others in training in terms of how much they lift, how long they hold a core exercise, or how fast they can run, you need to remember that your situation is different to theirs. They may have been training for a lot longer than you, so comparing your progress to theirs isn’t a good idea. Instead, focus on progressing on your own results and becoming a better version of yourself.

Fat loss is not a linear process, it’s more of a extravagant zig zag instead. Throughout your journey you will go through periods which are plain and sailing, and periods which feel like your falling through quicksand.

Throughout different periods of your life, your goals and priorities will change. This may mean fat loss takes the back seat while you prioritise other things, and that’s completely okay. There is no expiry date on you achieving your goals, so just because you may not be where you want to right now, does not mean that you never will be.

A free community event on 14th July in Castle Park, Bishop’s Stortford. Come & try an array of different fitness and well-being activities. I will be running at 11am from my stand - just come along to see what my women’s running groups are all about! Suitable for all.

Well, you need to make sure you are structuring your training right. Using the progressive overload concept is one way of allowing you to achieve your goals.

What is progressive overload? Progressive overload is the concept of  continually placing stress on the body in order to make increases in muscle size, strength and endurance.

There are a few ways of creating progressive overload. 
1. Increasing resistance (weights)
2. Increasing volume (sets x reps x weight) 
3. Increasing training frequency 
4. Decreasing resting time between sets
5. Increasing repetitions

More commonly, people increase their weights. Within the progressive overload method, this means increasing your weights over a training block (4-8weeks). Drastically increasing your weights too quickly is NOT an effective method, and can seriously increase the risk of injury. A better option would be able to increase the weights by 2.5kg each week, or where possible, while ensuring that you are able to complete all sets and reps with good form.

Supported single leg stiff leg deadlifts ➡️ allows you to feel it more in your hamstrings. Single leg work should be included in your training program to help you correct any imbalances and work on your weaker areas.

Tips:
1. Keep your standing leg slightly bent 
2. Keep your core tight throughout 
3. Maintain a neutral spine when going down with the weight 
4. Keep the dumbbell as close to your body as possible - should roll down your leg
5. Push back from your hips rather than bending down and rounding your back 
6. Squeeze your glutes when coming back up

Tried something new today, and that is hack squats. I actually prefer these compared to back squats, as they are more quad dominant due to the upright positioning.
