At the height of the drought, an abandoned baby elephant was found on the brink of death in the Mara. Seeing Musiara today, it’s hard to believe he’s the same elephant! This #SWTTransformationTuesday , discover his story.
RESCUE: The little elephant had clearly fallen victim to the drought like so many before him. With herds forced to move on to sustain themselves in this challenging time, he lay down in the shade of a tree, vulnerable and alone, with his life force ebbing away. By the time the Maasai Mara warden arrived at his side, only a faint heartbeat betrayed any evidence of life. A rescue was mobilized and our team brought him to the Nursery as quickly as possible, aware that we had a fight on our hands to save this little life.
RECOVERY: We named him Musiara, a nod to the area where he was rescued. He couldn’t have been more than a month old, as he had barely begun the teething process. For days, he hovered precariously between life and death, collapsing repeatedly. However, the Keepers’ constant presence and helping hands (which even extended to giving him personal dust baths when he was too weak to move his trunk!) eventually worked their magic.
TODAY: Musiara is now two years old — and couldn’t be a lovelier little bull. He is best friends with Luggard, another elephant who prefers take life at a leisurely pace. He also loves the mud bath and while he’s now fully capable of bathing himself, he’s still very happy to accept a helping hand from his beloved Keepers!
