USE PLAIN LANGUAGE
Perhaps you have come across one or two websites filled with all kinds of technical details and information about the company or their product. Or could that website be yours?
How easy to read was it?
If you want to make the most of your site, ensure the text is in plain language.
What is plain language?
It is an approach to writing that involves using common, ordinary words, and clear, direct sentences.
Plain language ensures that your audience understand your idea or thought at one reading. It gets you to write in a style that is concise and direct.
Much business writing tends to favour high-sounding, complex words. They assume these makes them appear official and professional.
So we say 'utilize' rather than 'use', 'communicate' rather than 'tell', 'collaborate' in place of 'work together'. However, the aim of writing is to get across to your audience as clearly and quickly as possible. Complex words, where there is a simpler alternative, are a hindrance. Even for websites.
Many prospective clients will try to learn about your brand, company, or product through the website. Beside the images and graphics, they will want to read the 'About us' section, check 'Our products', and maybe even 'Our history'. It is important to give them this information as quickly as possible before they get bored and move on to Facebook.
And that begins by using plain language.
