Super Snow Moon over Hermanus.
We’ll have three supermoons this year – the first was in January, one is happening tonight, and another is coming up in March. However, February’s Super snow moon will be the closest to the Earth. That means it will appear larger to us mere mortals over here on Earth. The term “supermoon” was first coined in the late seventies, and the scientific term is a “perigean full moon,” or “perigee syzygy.”
Perigee just means “near Earth” so that’s just a fancy word for describing the time when the Moon is closest in its orbit around our planet.
