Did some upper body work on the stability ball today.  Sure it was only with 5 and 3 pound weights but man am I going to feel this later. (I am already feeling it). Day 3 of no running and I am trying to make the most of it.  Spent some time at the pool with the little one and ab work.

Shouler-to-Overhead Movements with Dumbbells, Front Rack

Traditionally, working with dumbbells has been associated with bodybuilding training and accessory lifting.  Because of their versatility, dumbbells are excellent for targeting localized muscles and groups of muscles in the upper torso (chest, back, and shoulders) and arms.  More recently, fitness regimes like CrossFit have demonstrated their adaptability to more compound movements (e.g., weightlifting and powerlifting movements: push presses, snatches, etc.), that are usually performed with barbells.  In the upcoming weeks, I would like to explore how to use dumbbells most effectively with respect to shoulder-to-overhead movements in the CrossFit training context.

Today, I will discuss the proper way to rack a pair of dumbbells on the shoulders.  When deciding how to use some type of training implement, understanding end goals is essential.  What we do in training must translate (preferably directly) to what we will be called upon to do in the future.  In the CrossFit training context, shoulder-to-overhead movements can be performed with dumbbells as a means of complementing barbell work and improving overhead barbell mechanics.  When used for this purpose, athletes should work on racking and moving the dumbbells in a manner that most closely simulates doing so with a barbell.

Here are some keys for establishing a proper dumbbell front rack: 1) dumbbells should remain approximately parallel to the ground (horizontal); 2) dumbbells should point in the same direction as the elbows (primarily front-to-back); 3) elbows should be pointed forward and slightly outward; 4) shoulders should be pulled up and away from the body (creating a shelf on which the dumbbells or barbell can rest); 5) one head of each dumbbell should be in contact with each shoulder; 6) lungs and abdominal cavity should be filled with air; 7) midline/core/trunk should be braced at all times to maintain spinal neutrality. ~ Coach @b_bieschke_6

A little pump with some bright pink socks and ankle weights 😂 I do it all. Deadlifts are awesome for engaging your back body (particularly those hamstrings) and giving you an opportunity to practice good form. Start with lighter weights until you have the right posture, then gradually add weight while still maintaining that posture. If you lose the poise, you’ve added too much!

The perfect deadlift solution. Needed to protect the wood flooring in the gym, but I did not want to dedicate a full platform to a lift I only hit once a week, so I cut stall mats into 3 equal sections 2ft in length that easily stack and store.

Why do we have these? (we’ll give you a hint 🤫 it has to do with the female body). A 5 pound difference is substantial when it comes to upper body strength for women. Aka, it’s significantly harder for us to jump from 5 to 10lb dumbbells on triceps, for example. 💪🏋️‍♂️ ARM-BLASTING SUPERSET — Close Grip Bench-Press & Seated Bicep Curls! 🏋️‍♀️💪

🥵 This superset has been a staple in my arm days recently, try it out & let me know how it goes! 💪 ~
📝 CLOSE-GRIP BENCH PRESS:

1. Find a flat bench

2. Put on a weight that you can bench SLOW & CONTROLLED for 8-12 reps

3. Grab the bar with a close grip (look at where my hands are in the video, I usually put both of my index fingers on the inner line of the narrow grip)

4. Take a deep breath, lift the bar & SLOWLY bring the bar down until it lightly touches your chest. NO BOUNCING & KEEP YOUR ELBOWS TIGHT BY YOUR SIDES (no flaring your elbows out)

5. Exhale on your way up & squeeze those tris! 🔥 🔥 That’s 1 rep!

📝 SEATED BICEP CURLS:

1. Grab 2 dumbbells that you can curl SLOW & CONTROLLED for 8-12 reps

2. Sit on the flat bench with your core tight & elbows tight by your side

3. Take a deep breathe, SLOWLY lower the dumbbells - Keeping your elbows pointed down & tight by your sides, raise the dumbbells all the way up until your biceps are fully contracted 🔥 🔥 That’s 1 rep!

Pro tip: if you make obnoxious facial expressions during a set, it makes u look like ur working way harder, even if you’re being a pussy & using some light ass weight like 35lbs. Highly recommend using this technique especially when that thicc momma at your gym is walking by. Yea u know who I’m talkin bout 😏

Tried this new variation of shoulder press that recruits more core. Engage your core so you don’t have to do abs later. I hate doing abs so I’m all for multitasking. You can even engage your core while taking a shit but that’s for another time. -engage your core (obviously) -don’t go too heavy, your core probably isn’t that strong

Invest in yourself for better health so that later on, your engine will be running still while others may stop. Be in a mindset that it's your body that needs to be changed to be healthy to live longer and not anyone else's in your family, friends or relatives.
