It’s quite weird traveling the famous “East Coast of Australia Backpacker Route” when you’re not doing the greatest hits. I did the big things like Magnetic Island, Whitsundays, and Fraser Island when I was coming up the coast six months ago (!!!!) in August. So, I’ve just been bouncing my way down seeing the smaller sights this past week. BUT, yesterday, I spent about two hours waiting at the Airlie Beach bus station for my connection and it brought back so many great memories of my time there. One of which was seeing the Great Barrier Reef for the first time. I spent so much time sailing, selling, diving, and snorkeling it while living and working in Cairns that I’d nearly forgotten how overwhelming it was to look out the window of my scenic flight and see it there, protecting the coast of Queensland from the raging Coral Sea.
Also, side note, I got trapped into an hour long conversation with Jehovah’s Witness at the station. PSA: don’t evangelize people at the bus stop. We just want to eat our Doritos in peace 🙄 - 5 hours ago
