They don’t like Judas in Masatepe.
The celebration of the holly week brings out many traditions and Nicaragua isn’t the exception. Arriving in Masatepe on a holly Friday may as well feel as landing on a different planet, where colorful walking narwhals rule the kingdom. Not only that but they walk in pairs in the middle of the street tied to each other with a thick metallic chain. One can’t avoid asking thyself, wtf am i seeing?. It all started more than 150 years ago apparently, when the family of the Caleros decided to make these costumes and drag Judas on the street for betraying Jesus as a way of punishment. It sounds fun already, for everyone except for Judas.
Los judios (the Jews) how the narwhals are called, dress up in skirts which they usually borrow from their sisters or neighbors, wear a full face mask or equivalent made out of an old boxers, and the key element of the costume is the spear shaped helmet which is made out of cardboard, newspapers, wires and colorful plastics, each of them crafted to a specific diameter as there are little boys and grownups among the judios, girls also participate of this tradition however they seem to be outnumbered.
The judios team up in groups of their neighborhood, school and church. All of them go in their own gang with their designated Judases, which is usually a set of three, getting dragged on the streets of Masatepe at the middle of the day on top of hot concrete is not a one Judas job I can tell you that.
As in many Christian traditions, they are paying promise. Well the ones that go as Judas are paying double or triple promises. The judases wear a quite different costume, is more like a homemade friction suit with ten layers of clothing and foam and just about anything that can protect them from getting peeled alive in the streets. Some judases ingest a lot of alcohol before they feel brave enough to play judas, and i don’t blame them. Some seem more experienced and relaxed, like being chained and dragged in the streets it was just another day in life.
There’s no holly week without Judios in Masatepe. #CasaLuciaExperience - 18 hours ago
