#criticaleye #findoftheday This guy may just be my new very favorite thing! (SCROLL to understand his hidden parts and brilliance!) When I found him, it did not take me too long to realize that his carved wooden head pulled out of his body to reveal a knife attached, which I thought might be a letter opener, but it was not until I began photographing him this morning that I realized his legs, terminating in those fabulous carved wooden boots, pulled out as well--one to reveal a pencil and the other an ink pen, with a gold grip around the handle. So, what a charming little writing kit he makes, with the knife useful not just for opening letters but also for sharpening the pencil!
I have not been able to find another like him out there anywhere. I'd guess he is German, or maybe Dutch, circa 1920s-40s or so. Likely, there was once some sort of fabric glued to the tube that forms his body, but I rather like how its simple whiteness now makes him look rather like a butcher! The carving itself extends all the way down from his head to the knife blade, and all the way up from his boot to the grip of the ink pen. I just love the inventiveness of it all, and find him truly delight-inducing!
He’s standing on top of a wonderful old wooden box that contains a knife sharpening stone. The top of the box has met the tip of many a blade, giving it great character, and the stone dips in the middle from the many blades it has sharpened. A great and useful object, that I think would be especially perfect in a farmhouse style kitchen with very well worn butcher block countertops! $55 for the man, $45 for the sharpener/box. Both up in the shop; the tag for the man is not working on insta/fb but you will find him there! - 2 hours ago
