This painting pushed me in all the right ways. The first painting session seemed like all the other ocean paintings...then it dug in its heels. The wave wasn’t coming forwards, the foam looked flat, and the clouds looked too regular. So I put this painting away. It moved to my new studio a few months ago and got placed on a shelf. But I like to believe that paintings want to find their way out into the world. And it doesn’t do anyone any good to live on my shelf.
So I put on a podcast and started looking at what the painting needed—a gentler sky with a hint of crimson, transparency in the top of the wave, and bright white highlights in the foam. And then it happened. The wave fell forward, the foam jumped off the page, and the breeze tossed up that little spray on the top of the wave.
I’m glad that this one is off the shelf and ready for a new home, it taught me so much.
