Fietsen in Suriname (@fietseninsuriname )
That’s Etto Paulus (@ettopaulus ) and I was introduced to him by Bas Spek (will tell his story soon) as “the bike man”.
He is the responsible for the @fietseninsuriname the place where you can rent a bike here in Paramaribo (there are just two in town). He also guides tourists to mountain bike around the city and to wherever you want to go.
The generosity of Etto is beautiful. I had the luck in to ride with him to Commewijne.
From his kind eyes, constant smile and great stories you travel throughout time and cultures. He knows everybody and communicate fluently with Javanese, Indian, Maroon and Dutch people.
He started to believe that cycling could change Suriname, 10 years ago and in the last years his activism is bringing more and more people to the streets. “Awareness is what we want” he says.
Etto was also the first person that got surprised when I said I was Latin American and I was very proud of this. His face changed and after 20 minutes he came to me and said: “it was just when you mention that you were latim American that I realised that you really are, that we are.”
What he said sounds simple and communication can be tricky sometimes but what he said was for me very insightful.
Thanks again @ettopaulus For everything - 20 minutes ago
