When I first began accidentally Crossfitting, I was convinced that I was definitely not their ideal candidate, having been excused from every P.E. class in my life, due to childhood asthma.
An athlete, I was not....
I couldn't do a situp to save my life, could lie down on the ground, but failed to push myself up more then twice and was winded after rowing approximately 20 meters...
The very idea of Bear crawls and inch worms, induced a film of sweat to break out on my forehead, with their mere mention.
"I'm too old for this.." I muttered alot, while attempting to rise from a sitting position, only to find my legs had lost all desire to participate.
It was true....I was suffering from the oldness, but my mind refused to believe it and my mouth had rushed to accept my son's invitation to join his gym .....his treat.
It was a thoughtful gesture...I think.
And now it's been a year of getting up and down, stepping on boxes and lifting heavy things.
I've rowed so far, that if I wasn't stationary, I'd be lost in some jungle somewhere half way across the world.(I am admittedly direction impaired, so I may be slightly off on this assumption.)
I've done the Murph and finished it...
I've learned to squat....and then learned how to squat correctly.
I've sat up, many times in a row and can now push myself off the ground...repeatedly.
All this to say, getting older doesn't have to be a wind down....
It can be the start of a brand new adventure.
And even if you start out slow and feeling the pain of victory, a bit more acutely then your twenty something gym mates...
If you perservere, tamp down the desire to use your new found skill of 'running'...to run home, and continue to do the hard things each day....
I suspect, you will find yourself reborn....and most certainly stronger!
