🙃Why I cut out refined sugar🙃
✍️Initially it was a personal challenge, & I didn't think I'd stick with it this long...
🤸But without wanting to sound too dramatic...it has changed my life🤸
✨I naturally prefer savoury over sweet, & didn't add sugar to my food anyway (i.e. the only reason I had it in the house was for guests)✨
🍒🍌I do have foods with naturally occurring sugars (like fruit etc.), but avoid added sugars, artificial sweeteners, honey, stevia, xylitol - any added sweetener really (even if it claims to be "natural")🍥🍧🥧
🧐It is tricky - when scrutinising labels you realise how many things have added sugars... particularly things you really wouldn't expect🧐 Why do tinned chickpeas need added sugar?!Sugars are often also masked by weird names... so it feels like you have to become a sugar detective🕵️
🗓️It was really tough for the first few days, but now I genuinely don't crave sweets & I feel so much better overall, that it makes it worth all the faff of going zero sugar. 🙆Although I have no hard evidence, research shows that changing your diet changes the composition of your gut microbiome...which can directly affect which foods you crave 🍩🍬🍭So perhaps I've starved my "junk food loving microbes" & fed my "heathy food loving microbes"?🥑🥦🍍
🤔I'm super curious to see the effect it has had on the composition of species making up my gut microbiome🤔🦠
Anecdotal evidence (this could be linked to many other things): 🧠clearer thinking (less "brain fog")
💪more stable energy levels throughout the day - no late afternoon slumps that require a sugary treat & coffee!
🦄less food cravings 💃my taste buds are not only super sensitive to sweetness, but in general it feels like a whole new world of flavours has opened up for me (toothpaste even tastes intensely sweet!)
🚶🏼♀️body composition - I didn't intend to lose weight, & it can't be solely attributed to cutting out sugar, but I did lose fat & gain muscle
I'm quite certain that one can be addicted to sugar - & for me it defs worked to go "cold turkey" about 11 months ago now...
