I was telling my therapist that lately, I can’t handle more than half an hour at a time. “My brain is just broken!” I told him despondently. Calmly, he just replied, “Okay. If you can only take things as they come? Then do that. You’ve got thirty minutes in front of you. What are you going to do with it?”
I had always looked to other people (that was my first mistake) and assumed that, if I didn’t have the perfect schedule and all my priorities in order, I was really f*cking up.
As ridiculous as it sounds, it had never occurred to me that it’s actually FINE to just focus on what’s right in front of you. If that’s all you can do? You don’t need to force yourself to operate beyond your capacity. You can radically accept where you are, and with self-compassion, move at your own pace and tackle each moment as it comes.
When I started taking things a little bit at a time, I started to build momentum. I was able to, little by little, care for myself in a more mindful, compassionate way. When I stopped trying to force myself to show up in ways I couldn’t, I began to heal in ways that expanded my ability to show up in new (and energized!) ways.
I understand now that radical acceptance is at the heart of #recovery . What that looks like lately is this: On my own time, at my own pace, on my own terms, with my full humanity. If that means I can only handle what’s right in front of me? I’m graciously moving through my day the best way I know how.
If you need permission, here it is: You can do this. Yes, on your own time, at your own pace, on your own terms, with your glorious, messy, whole self completely in-tact.
