2. Read off every number in the center of the screen

Challenging Our Cognitive Distortions and Creating Positive Outlook. many of us find ourselves in a state of constant worry. Worrying is not a solution to problems, but rather a non-productive way of thinking. Many individuals often confuse worrying with planning; however planning produces actions while worrying produces more anxiety. Making everything a Catastrophe.

Often known as “catastrophizing”, this is when an individual expects the worst scenario to happen. For example and individual involved in this type of thinking may say “There’s a thirty minute delay in traffic, I’ll never get to work” or “the pilot said there is turbulence, we’re really going to crash”. THE CHALLENGE: Think positive! Take the event for what it is and don’t make it anything other than that. If there is a delay in traffic, think rationally. Instead of thinking “I’m never going to get there”, think “I may be late, but I will get there”. In the meantime, focus on positive things you can do such as enjoying the scenery or listening to your favorite music. You may find that engaging in other positive thoughts decreases the amount of time there is for negative thinking.

Your subconscious mind is very simple and basic in its translation of language.  It weeds out words like “don’t” and only hears the rest. .
Imagine you’re about to take a big exam and you tell yourself “Don’t fail”. Your subconscious mind only hears “fail”. .
When facing anxiety provoking tasks, tell yourself the outcome you WANT rather than the outcome you’re avoiding”.

There are two kinds of RAD: inhibited and disinhibited. General Symptoms of Inhibited RAD Include detachment, unresponsive or immune to comfort, holding back emotions, withdrawn or a hybrid of approach and avoidance. Common Symptoms With Disinhibited RAD Include: Indiscriminate sociability and Inappropriately familiar or selective in the selection of attachment figure. Symptoms of RAD will generally begin to reveal itself when the child is between 0 and two years of age. As the child develops, it becomes increasingly evident in their inappropriate social communications, expectations, and actions towards others. Symptoms of RAD include, but are not limited too, lack of empathy, remorse, controlling behavior, cruelty, explosive rages, impulsivity, learning disability, ADHD, and primary lying. ☝️
Since RAD is a neurological disorder, neurofeedback therapy is a wonderful alternative treatment and is highly successful. Many people with attachment disorders have trouble managing emotions and calming themselves because of trauma (emotional or physical) they have experienced. Training with neurofeedback therapy will target the regions of the brain that control these abilities. This method of treatment will teach a person how to manage their brain, regulate emotions and improve the portions of the brain that create tranquility. Because of the effectiveness of this treatment, neurofeedback has become a core method for many RAD therapists. At the Eustache Institute, we have treated many children, who’ve been adopted or spent time in the foster care system, to overcome Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD). RAD can arise when the natural method of developing attachments to primary care figures in early childhood is interrupted by neglect like disregarding a child’s needs (emotional and physical) and repeated change of primary caregivers, which can prevent a child from forming healthy attachments. Attachment occurs when a child is frequently reassured, encouraged, cared for, and when the caregiver consistently meets the child’s requirements. When a child connects with a loving and protecting guardian, this will enable them to love and trust others, be aware of their emotions and needs and also recognize and understand the needs and feelings of others, having empathy. They will begin to cultivate healthy relationships and have a positive self-image. The lack of emotional affection throughout the first several years of life can negatively impact a child’s future. 👼

Isn’t there something so fascinating about the early stages of life? From old to young, growing a plant seems to get the buy in from all parties. Recently I started a tracking project with one of my students. Each day him (and his para!) check to see if the soil is wet/dry, if the plant grew, and if so, how much it grew by by. This type of activity can be carried over across all ages and ability levels. We can target so many goals with such a simple activity! It also builds relationships and something to look forward to each session. One goal we are working on is secretion management and understanding the difference of being wet, and being dry. Checking the soil everyday helps to establish what wet vs dry is in the first place! We are also targeting sequencing, which is the underpinning of language and AAC competency. We are also targeting size, order, and so much more. The desire to attract the other is proper to the human being but the influence of negative thoughts and emotions on oneself can distort the body image and develop an over concern for the body.

The extremes in each situation (worrying too much vs. not worrying at all) are expressing other feelings and emotions at play that can be worked in a therapeutic space.

Handbells keep my brain smart. Really. I’m reading music and moving my hands(and my mouth), and it keeps my brain extra active.

I’m fighting my brain slowing down.  Both parents had cognitive issues later in life. I eat a ton of veggies, little meat. Next up.. lessen sugar from my diet.

Remember, starting strong is the easy part. Finishing stronger is much harder. If you’re not achieving your goals within your designated time frame, then recalibrate and set new deadlines for yourself. When you’re successful, reward yourself. If you trust the process, you will feel satisfied.

Losing weight is an art form, it takes patience, time and commitment, but most of all it takes a will to succeed. A person must be 100 percent committed to losing weight and getting healthy, which means the entire brain needs to run efficiently. For some of us, Valentine’s Day only seems to heighten the sense of social isolation and even make people who aren’t in romantic relationships feel badly about themselves.

There are lots of Destructive Thoughts about Valentine’s Day, such as these:
—
1. “Valentine’s Day proves just how much of a loser I really am.”
—
2. “Everybody else has someone special but me.”
—
3. “I’ll never find someone to be my valentine.”
—
The first destructive thought is an example of a flawed thought pattern called “Labeling”. It’s flawed because when we use negative 1 or 2 word phrases to describe ourselves or others, we’re ignoring the facts.

The facts are that every human being is complex and has many different roles, like the facets of a cut diamond.

Calling myself one thing is ignoring the fact that I’m a loving son or caring daughter, a good cook, a loyal sister, a hard worker, a devoted father and myriad other characteristics that can reflect or refract light in many different angles and wavelengths like that same diamond.

From now on, I’ll remember to value the many facets of my personality and those of other people.

In that way I can really come to appreciate the world and my place in it, as a reflection of the true spirit of Valentine’s Day, which is unconditional love for all people, including myself.

Calling myself one thing is ignoring the fact that I’m a loving son or caring daughter, a good cook, a loyal sister, a hard worker, a devoted father and myriad other characteristics that can reflect or refract light in many different angles and wavelengths like that same diamond. From now on, I’ll remember to value the many facets of my personality and those of other people. In that way I can really come to appreciate the world and my place in it, as a reflection of the true spirit of Valentine’s Day, which is unconditional love for all people, including myself.
