IS POOR COGNITION CAUSING YOUR BURNOUT?
Burnout syndrome is linked with poor cognition due to prolonged stress, resulting in a state of emotional, mental and physical exhaustion. The cognitive domains most related to burnout are attention, executive function or memory. In 2017, 37% of adults in the U.S. noted an increase in stress levels throughout the year, and it accounts for an estimated $125b to $190b in annual health-care spending.
Our workplace-based studies showed that no-one, not even senior executives, are exempt from cognitive deficits. According to research, social workers, teachers and nurses are most at risk of burnout, but no occupation is immune and anyone using their cognitive capabilities to the max is at risk of burnout.
Bad lifestyle habits, such as poor nutrition, hydration, lack of exercise and sub-optimal sleep can weaken cognition, increasing the risk of burnout. In one of our studies, a programme promoting positive lifestyle habits reported significant improvements in overall cognition.
Building resilience and strengthening the cognitive core could prevent burnout, e.g. improving executive function improves planning, organisation, self-regulation and emotional control. Our apps can be used in the workplace on any device to evaluate and strengthen cognition.
