Reposted from @teamterpene - In agriculture, a living mulch is a cover crop interplanted or undersown with a main crop, and intended to serve the purposes of a mulch, such as weed suppression and regulation of soil temperature.
Living mulches grow for a long time with the main crops, whereas cover crops are incorporated into the soil or killed with herbicides.
Other benefits of mulches are slowing the growth of weeds, and protecting soil from water and wind erosion.
Some living mulches were found to increase populations of the natural enemies of crop pests.
Legumes used as living mulches also provide nitrogen fixation, reducing the need for fertilizer. 🏽
Pictured is Star Pupil, bred by @massmedicalstrains , looking pretty good to us on bloom day 41.
5 feminized seeds were planted in this pot and 2 rooted, so you’re witnessing 2 plants share a symbiotic relationship in this 30 gallon, third cycle, no till pot.
Yes, there is a 30 gallon Geopot measuring 28” x 12” under all that flourishing live mulch. 🏽🏽🏽
Along with the living mulch, we add handfuls of stuff such as hay, comfrey, nettles, yarrow, neem leaf, holy basil, dandelion leaf, horsetail, microgreens from a local organic farm all that will be consumed by the microbes and in turn feed our plants.
Water only is applied to our soil constantly with the help of our Blumats drip system, from our good friends at @sustainablevillage , keeping our soil moist, not wet.
No need for ANY bottled nutrients of any kind, folks. 🤷🏻♂️
You’re witnessing it for yourself and working just as Mother Nature intended. 🏽🏽
