Formal doesn't have to mean boring!
For your first few pairs of cufflinks, I would recommend staying away from cufflinks that are shaped like objects or that have pictures or wild patterns on them.
Go for a single metal colour and a single, not too flashy accent colour. Second hand stores are great for finding nice cufflinks at reasonable prices. If you can't find what you're looking for second hand you can try department stores (e.g. @hudsonsbay , @nordstrom , etc), suit stores (e.g. @tiptop ), and online (e.g. @amazon ). Just keep in mind that when a price looks to good to be true, it probably is.
The cufflinks in the first photo are the ones that I wore to my wedding. I got them off of Amazon after a long search for green cufflinks and have been very happy with them. They are no longer available, but they are by Kemstone.
The cufflinks in the second photo I got second hand from St Vincent De Paul (https://thrift-store.ca/).
The cufflinks in the third photo were also from Amazon. https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00DEXOVBO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Qu1lDbV4RM7SN
