🇺🇸 Considering the wild hair, pairing my Beast shirt with these pink camo leggings was appropriate gym attire for today’s chest and back attack. Getting out of my neutral-colored comfort zone for sure! Also learning to give my body some rest; the sauna is becoming a regular habit.

THIS. IS. SO. AMAZING. My friends at @studioz.life are throwing a giant fitness dance party in support of our little wild man and our family. 🙌🏼😭💜 I swear I couldn’t get through this without the amazing support of the community around me. 
If you guys are free next Saturday, March 23rd please come out and celebrate Dylan with us!  Even if you don’t dance, Come out and say hi! It is going to be so nice to see everyone and be somewhere besides the hospital! Not to mention how AMAZING it is going to feel to move my body with all of my buds!!! When dieting or controlling your intake to minimize body fat, it's a good idea for everyone to get a food scale. I don't think everyone needs to always use a food scale to weigh their food, but it can help you recognize what foods are "friendly" to your caloric intake & foods that are "detrimental" to your caloric intake. Using a food scale will help you realize that you can eat a high volume of certain foods, while other foods used in excess are to be consumed with caution. Keep in mind that this is all about minimizing body fat.

Even if you use a food scale for only 2 weeks or you use it here and there, it can help you understand that foods like avocados, oils, nut butters, pestos, sauces, etc. are extremely high in fat. Now, that's not to say that these foods are "bad" foods, because they are not. But it just allows you to understand that if you want to minimize body fat, consuming a large quantity of these foods may not be the best idea for you even though they are healthy.

If you are looking to lean out, with no plans of a competition or photoshoot, I think it's okay to use a food scale sometimes and sometimes not. If you are getting serious about competing or wanting to get as shredded as possible, then using a food scale is going to allow you to achieve that look much easier with no guesswork.

If you want to be healthy, look good, and perform well in the gym, then it would be advantageous for you to get a food scale and become accustomed to the caloric content in all the foods you like to consume on a regular basis. And once you feel like you have a good grasp on it, shy yourself away from the food scale & live with some flexibility.

A common fitness myth is the idea that you should "chase the soreness". Not being sore means you won't see a change and improvement, because you don't feel the muscles.⠀

Feeling the muscles be a little tired or just "worked" after a workout is good and totally normal, but being so sore that you can't get out of bed in the morning or walk normally is not good for your body or workouts. Soreness is common when you're beginning your fitness journey or starting a new program, but chronic soreness isn't ideal.⠀

Being so sore you can't move not only affects your movement patterns (which leads to injuries) and makes your next workout sucky (since you literally can't move), but requires more recovery. The required recovery from soreness prevents you from increasing frequency, a key part to progression in fitness. I am always running out of gym clothes before laundry gets done. 🤦🏻‍♀️ So, I bought a few leggings at the Arnold Expo from Figure Slim. They’re comfortable, don’t slip, and these have a flattering heart detail on the backside. I wore them for extra motivation while I tested my bench press strength: 45 lbs x 10 warm-up, 65 x 10 easy, 85 x 10 good, 95 x 5 good, 100 x 3 challenging, 105 x 1 good but couldn’t get a second rep. I’m surprised that my overall basics strength hasn’t tanked significantly! 🙌🏼

My journey is about STRENGTH, not just physique! Since I have been prepping for competition, I have been focused on hypertrophy and not necessarily strength. So, I decided for this weekend to see how my strength is on basic lifts. Used Brett Contreras’ Female Strength Chart as a basis for comparison. Tried my deadlifts, push-ups, and chin-ups today.
💛 Deadlifts were solid with good form up until 185 lbs x 10 reps. Then I jumped up to 205 lbs x 2 reps; definitely NOT the best form! So, I am going to work on building these back up and focusing on good form all around.
💚 Push-ups were great! Knocked 32 unassisted/regular reps before collapsing onto the mat.
💛 Chin-ups weren’t good or bad. Got 8 body weight reps on the first set, then 6 on the second. 
According to the chart, I am at the low end of Elite strength -> but, I feel like that is very generous! 😅 I am probably at an intermediate level, and I am okay with that! Tomorrow: squats, bench press, and military press.

Pose of the Month is Side Plank (Sanskrit: Vasisthasana) Working to both strengthen & stretch our lateral lines this month to help with both posture and balance.  I often see this as a need whether you fall into the “super active” or “fairly stationery” categories so no shame or judgements. Props & modifications are great equalizers. So instead of resisting and fighting, grab a block, take a step forward, or drop a knee. Be curious from the inside out. Let your limiting beliefs about what you can and can’t do fade away with each and every time you simply try .

Actually, doing that can cause your body to put on more fat. Starving your body makes it panic and it doesn’t know if you have access to enough food, so it starts conserving all the energy it can in the way it knows best - fat. ⠀

If you can build up a really good base of muscle and strength by eating enough to fuel your body combined with proper strength programming, you’ll boost your metabolism! This gets your body working harder since muscle requires more energy than fat does. A higher metabolism = maintaining body weight while eating more calories = easier and less dangerous to cut calories. And all that muscle means you don’t need to do hours of cardio to burn off some extra calories. 💃💃⠀

Once your metabolism is ROARING from all those strength gains you’ve made, you can phase yourself into an endurance phase of training (body isn’t craving more food to turn into muscle like you would in a lower rep range) and cut your calories by a couple hundred. ⠀

So far this year I’ve been working on building strength & muscle, healthy habits, and consistency, while eating as much as my body needs for fuel (prioritizing clean foods but I DEFINITELY ate chips and ice cream oops 🍦).⠀

My weight has maintained but body comp has clearly changed as I’m seeing more definition and my clothes are fitting better. This week marks my first week of cutting. Going from 2500+ calories and maintaining to ~2000, which is a pretty extreme cut, but still eating more food than the average girl my size (5’7”, 150 lb). ⠀

We’ll see how this cut goes but I’m pretty excited. 🤩🤩 So far I’m feeling good (just trying to battle the habits of buying snacks o o p s) and even more excited to start training for aesthetics at the end of the month with my new base of muscle!! 🏋🏻‍♀️

Always love when longtime Hypertrofit client @joe_tarach is in town. Putting on a clinic with some brutal zerchers squats! We haven’t been able to work traditional back or front squats due to some pre-existing shoulder issues, but he can absolutely crush these!

A common belief is that women should stay away from chest/upper body lifting because it will make them look bulky and “manly”. Let me just say, FAKE NEWS! I have never been more proud of my body until I started lifting and starting lifting HEAVY. Learning about movement and seeing how it can come together to allow new/more movement paths is awesome. I’ve been paying close attention to specificity. To move in similar ways with similar efforts, but with a scaleable approach. It gives people the opportunity to discover connections, explore how their bodies move and make decisions.
